“There's a lot of talk these days about giving children self-esteem. It's not something you can give; it's something they have to build. Coach Graham worked in a no-coddling zone. Self-esteem? He knew there was really only one way to teach kids how to develop it: You give them something they can't do, they work hard until they find they can do it, and you just keep repeating the process.”
Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Updated Important reminders for both my juniors and seniors:
  • ALL missing, late, and make-up work is due absolutely no later than the beginning of class on Friday, May 24th! This is the last day of the 6th six weeks' grading period, and all work not turned in will be given a zero. The grading period will end at 3:55 p.m. on Friday, May 24th, and I will not accept any work at that point without prior approval from Dr. Carter. *Remember that all work assigned before an absence is due upon your return to class, and you only have the number of days, plus a day for each day missed if you are absent (I will work with you as long as you schedule a time to make-up a quiz/test within that time period).
Background:
This year is my sixth year at Grapevine High School. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Education, and I graduated magna cum laude from The University of Texas at Arlington. In addition, I now have my English M.A. from the graduate program at UT Arlington with a focus on Rhetoric/Composition and Theory. During my time here at GHS, I have taught Global Studies GT, Pre-AP English III, English III, and English IV classes. I absolutely love my job and look forward to another great year at GHS!

Personal:
Most of my  free time is spent having fun with my husband David, our son Braden, and our dog Rusty. I also enjoy reading, writing, and traveling.

My Personal Mission
I will no longer teach my classes. As an educator, I will replace what I use to "teach" with an intentional pedagogy of digital rhetoric which emphasizes the civic importance of education and engages students in the interactivity, collaboration, ownership, authority, and malleability of texts. If my initial plan is not enough, I will do more. If it does not work, I will change it! I will do whatever it takes for my students to learn, to master, to grow as readers, writers, and thinkers, and to have what they do in class each day matter. In short, my mission is to make a difference in the life of every student that enters my classroom.

Like Yoda says...
"If no mistake have you made, yet losing you are ... a different game you should play."

Why should I do something differently?                                                                                        Why should I create new lessons and present them in new ways?
