Biology helps us understand the big picture.  It connects us to the world we are living in and reminds us of our interconnectedness with all other forms of life.  Students learn to make more informed choices about their own health and about significant issues such as genetically modified crops, the use of antibiotics, and the eradication of species.  Students become much more aware of ecological issues, and better able to discuss situation where exploitation of the environment clashes with conservation objectives, or where we need to develop more sustainable ways of using our natural resources.  In addition, science courses help to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills through guided inquiry and discovery learning.   This year, I hope you will fearlessly dive in to learning--making mistakes, reconsidering, and asking important questions.  There is so much to discover about the world and ourselves.
