Course Syllabus
Course Objectives
The senior English curriculum is designed to expose students to British Literature and the formative works that impacted Western thought and tradition.  We will place emphasis on researching skills, writing for various purposes, cultural literacy, and critical analysis of literature.  There will also be an emphasis on teaching seniors how to write academic papers.  This college level approach will help students develop skills that will be useful as they continue their education or join the workforce.

Required Materials
1. Textbook: Holt McDougal Literature: British Literature
2. 2nd semester novels: Frankenstein, Brave New World (students should obtain a copy prior to the unit)
3. Folder/Binder to store returned assignments and homework w/ notebook paper
4. Pencil and a blue or black pen
5. Spiral notebook to be kept in class

Grading Policies
Each six-week grade will be calculated as follows:
60% Major - major grades: includes test, most essays, and projects
40% Quizzes and daily grades: quiz grades include quizzes over literature, grammar, and vocabulary. Daily grades include homework, in-class assignments, journals, worksheets, and participation

Tardy Policy
The school tardy policy will be strictly enforced. Please read carefully:
1st tardy: Warning; acknowledge that student is tardy
2nd tardy: Student conference
3rd tardy: Teacher consequence (after school detention) and parent phone call
4th tardy: Office referral + after school detention (Note: You're now ineligible to exempt my semester exam!!)

Late Work / Make-up Work Policy
Any assignment turned in one class period after the assigned due date will receive a maximum score of 70. Any assignment NOT turned in one class period after the assigned due date will receive a grade of a 1 (see course syllabus).  Tests and quizzes must be completed on the date assigned, with the exception of make-up work from absences.  Students are responsible for obtaining any work they have missed due to an absence, rather it is the student's responsibility to get the missing assignments from the teacher when he/she returns from an absence.

Academic Honesty Policy
All work turned in is expected to be your own work.  Plagiarism will result in a grade of zero for the assignment.  Plagiarism is defined as "the false assumption of authorship: the wrongful act of taking the product of another person's mind, and presenting it as one's own" (Alexander Lindley, Plagiarism and Originality  [New York: Harper, 1952] 2).  This includes all forms of copying, cutting/pasting, and cheating whether the material is taken in whole or in part from a book, the Internet, another student, or other source.  In an instance where material has been obtained from another student, both parties will receive a grade of zero.  After any infraction, a student-teacher-parent conference may be scheduled.
