Why Graduate from High School - Why Go To College?

High school graduation should be a goal for most students in order to prepare them for the 21st Century.  Jobs in the future will take an overall education with some focus on technology in order to be able to function in the world of work.

As you make your plans for the future,  continuing your education with either college work or specific schooling to enter a specialized field, such as food preparation, construction, technology, and other fields of personal interest will be an important factor in your economic success.

Consider these facts from the U.S. Census Bureau:
  • 56% of jobs today require some post-secondary education
  • 80% of the jobs projected to grow the fastest over this decade require some education after high school
  • Dropping out of high school  or failing to earn a college degree severely limits a person"s employment options and earning potential.
  • A college graduate makes twice as much as a student who has only a high school diploma.
  • Adults who stay in school longer are more likely to have good health, volunteer in their communities, and exercise their right to vote.
Earnings over lifetime with a college degree:
Professional degree                   $4.4 million

Master"s degree                        $2.5 million

Bachelor"s degree                     $2;1 million

Associate"s degree                    $1.6 million

Did you Know That...
  • The highest ranking graduate at each Texas public high school receives a certificate from the Texas Education Agency that can be used as a scholatship to cover tuition costs at any Texas public college or university?
  • students ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class from an accredited public or private Texas high school are eligible for automatic admission to any Texas public university if they have completed the Recommended or Distinguished Achievement Plan?
  • students can earn college credit while still in high school by taking advancement placement courses and passing the advanced placement tests or by enrolling in and passing dual credit courses?
  • a college graduate will have average lifetime earnings twice that of a high school graduate?

As we begin the process of enrollment for the coming school year (2011-2012), please consider your choices carefully.  Set your goals now for success in your future.    Make choices that work for you and determine to be persistant in your desire to better yourself.
