    In First Grade…

    Literacy looks like.....fun!

Reading is done in small as well as whole group instruction.  Students create a sound Guided Reading foundation as they are immersed in language through all the subjects.  We will read as a class, in partners, with the teacher and alone in Drop Everything And Read times. As they progress, they begin to move through my personal library of appropriate chapter books (I'm a book nut!) and work on fluency (the rate of their reading - does it sound like they are talking to someone or is it word for word?)  and comprehension.  It is very important to me that reading has meaning for them and they understand how often we use reading in our lives and the power it has!

    Math looks like...

    ...a cooperative effort.

To accommodate the many, learning styles, we will be exploring a variety of cognitively guided ways to learn.  We will make patterns, read about Odd Todd and Even Steven, use manipulatives, write in a math journal and do some nifty paper and pencil activities.  If you can look at it from a different point of view, we’re going to do it!  I want everyone to be challenged on the level that best fits them so they expand their thinking as well as learning the basic facts.

    Science looks like…

    ...a great big mess.

If you didn’t get something on your hands, then you didn’t do science.  We will investigate not only the how, but the why and why not.  Science is a great place to learn that mistakes are only the beginning.

    Social Studies looks like…

...we do!  We will bring the many cultures, communities and good character traits to life as we discover the world around us.
