Classroom Expectations
Attendance: Students may come into the building at 7:20 a.m. and will go to the cafeteria until the 7:35 bell. Please be sure your child arrives BEFORE the 7:45 bell. If they arrive after 7:45, they will be counted tardy. A student who arrives late will be missing important instruction.
Homework: Good study habits need to be established now while your child is young. Let your child know that you believe homework is important. Have a special time and place for the homework to be done. Keep the homework sheet that is sent home on Mondays and have your child complete the assignments during the week. The homework sheet is due on FRIDAY. Students not returning the homework sheet will have to complete the assignments during recess time. In addition to the assignments on the homework sheet, students are expected to read and practice math facts daily. Homework in second grade should NOT exceed 30 minutes. If your child requires more time to complete the assignments contact the teacher for more suggestions and adjustments.
Report Cards: Second grade students will receive the same report card as the third through fifth grade students. This report card uses a numeric grading system.
Discipline: Discipline is important because teachers must maintain order in the classroom to give all children the opportunity to learn. We downplay tangible rewards and emphasize the intrinsic rewards of good behavior. We use class meetings to teach students ways to solve conflicts they may have with each other. Class meetings will be held regularly and include a sharing time to praise students, compliment each other and discuss problems.
Enrichment: The formal enrichment program in second grade is a “pull out” program for those students who have qualified for the gifted program, PAT. This year the PAT class will meet on Wednesday morning. Mrs. Sherri Hamilton is the teacher for this program. The classroom teacher will also provide many additional opportunities for enrichment for all students.
