About Mrs. Buchanan
Mrs. Buchanan on the field at The Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
April 10, 2012 was GCISD night at the Rangers, and
Teachers of the Year from GCISD campuses were invited to be recognized before the game.
Attending Teacher's College Writing Project at Columbia University in NYC was a highlight of my 2016 summer!
This will be my 22nd year teaching in GCISD! Fifteen of those years I was self-contained in first grade, and the remainder have been spent teaching fourth grade Humanities.
I grew up in Hermantown, Minnesota, a suburb of Duluth, where my extended family still resides. I graduated cum laude from Bemidji State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. I am so proud to be a part of GCISD, where professional educators are given tools to stay innovative!
I enjoy spending time with my husband Terry and my children Brenden, 16, and Allison, 11. We enjoy camping, traveling to visit family, and spending time with friends, family and cheering on local sports teams. We have found a new favorite vacation spot after visiting Destin, Florida this past June. I also love to spend time in the kitchen and one of my hobbies is decorating cakes. I love books, and have been known to even read some of my favorite authors (Karen Kingsbury and Francine Rivers) during every spare moment- sometimes while drying my hair or cooking dinner. Even though I may not be on pitch all the time, I love music and sing a lot in my classroom.
On the educational front, I was selected to be a part of "The Digital Classroom Cadre" in January of 2012. Our entire campus has continued to have digital classrooms in which each child has an iPad. We are exploring and creating as we continue our journey to be a learner centered classroom. I am so proud and humbled to have been selected by my peers as Heritage Elementary's Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013. During the past three years our campus has embraced a writing program created by Lucy Calkins and her colleagues at Columbia University. During the summer of 2016, Mrs. Voigt and I had the privilege and opportunity to attend the Teacher's College Writing Project "Summer Institute" at Columbia University in New York City. It was an amazing experience to learn and collaborate with educators, authors, and leaders in writing instruction from around the world! I cannot wait to share these experiences with our staff and students!
Relationships with my students and parents are very important to me, so I encourage open communication as we journey through the 2017-2018 school year!
