To understand art, it is important to understand the language of art. This is achieved in each grade level by learning about the elements of art,
what parts make up an artwork. And the principals of design, words that tell how an artwork is put together.
I begin with the basic ideas of the elements of art in Kindergarten and build upon them as the students progress through grade levels.
The elements of art are line, color, value shape, texture, form and space. The principals of art are proportion, variety, emphasis, unity, balance, rhythm and pattern.
As the students advance through the grade levels, their projects become more in-depth and detailed. Also, they may combine more elements and principals depending on the project.
