    Memorial Day holiday on Monday
    GCISD schools and offices will be closed on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Enjoy the long weekend and please pause to remember the servicemen and servicewomen who have sacrificed for our country.
     
    Valedictorians and Salutatorians recognized by GCISD Board of Trustees 
    The GCISD Board of Trustees recognized the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of both Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine High School during their May 20 meeting. Students and their families were showcased for the unique honor their hard work and dedication has led them to achieve.     Bridges Class of 2013 celebrates Graduation
    Students at Bridges Accelerated Learning Center gathered with friends, family and instructors at the Colleyville Center this week for their graduation ceremony. During the event, several students spoke about the challenges and rewards Bridges presented to them throughout the year, as well as the positive impact this unique school has had on their lives.     GCISD community fills trucks for Oklahoma relief effort
    Community members donated two truckloads of supplies to assist those affected by this week's tornado and severe weather in Moore, Okla. The effort was organized by GHS Football parent Ann Bachand and facilitated by GHS Mustang coaches and players. To read more and see a video and photos, click here.
     
    LEAD 2021: First-graders 'go wild' about project
    First-graders from Bear Creek Elementary School and Grapevine Elementary School recently teamed up to answer the call of wild – Texas style. Their collaboration, which was the culmination of a Project Based Learning assignment about Texas wildlife, developed after BCE teacher Maureen Simmons and GES teachers Joy Fowler and Darla Helms attended a training about designing engaging PBL assignments.     GHS students earn top marks at State UIL Meet 
    Sophomore Shayal Vashisth and Freshman Tine Valencic earned the title of State Champion at the recent Academic UIL State Championship. Click here to see a photo and read about the other awards they won.
     
    Limited Open Enrollment for STEM at Cannon
    Families from across GCISD interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are invited to an information night on Thursday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m. at Cannon Elementary. For more information on the STEM program, click here.
     
    Summer program provides free meals to children
    The Summer Food Service Program provides free meals to all children age 18 and younger during part of the summer. These meals provide essential nutrients for active growing children. To participate in the free meal program, children simply need to show up at a serving site. To see when breakfast and lunch are offered and at what campuses, click here.
     
    Batters up! GCISD Rangers night June 12!
    The Rangers Ballpark in Arlington will showcase GCISD on Wednesday, June12. Discounted tickets are available and $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the district. Tickets may be purchased online at texasrangers.com/schools (password: ISD13).

Previously, the district had used Skyward for registration, but has transitioned to Infosnap to help streamline the registration process for parents. This new system brings the following benefits:
    • New students to the district will be able to begin the registration process prior to coming to the campus by filling out the forms online;
    • Parents may complete multiple forms at one time;
    • General information for siblings is automatically populated, therefore parents only need to enter this information once; and 
    • The application resembles a questionnaire format, offering parents greater ease in entering requested information.

    LEAD 2021: HMS students tap expertise of global corporation
    When Heritage Middle School (HMS) seventh-grade English/Language Arts teachers Andy Tucker and Clint Bland sat down to plan how they were going to introduce students to advertising techniques and media literacy, they had no idea a global organization would open their doors to offer students a behind-the-scenes look.     CHHS students raise money for West, TX disaster relief
    This week, members of the Colleyville Heritage High School Student Council came together to lend a helping hand to the disaster stricken town of West, TX.  The group raised over $1200 through donations from students and staff members, all going towards the relief effort in the small Texas town.     Bransford students have 'Green Thumbs for Giving'
    When Bransford Elementary School parents show up on Fridays to pick up their students, they could be greeted by little chefs and gardeners who have some home-grown ideas for dinner – and some bigger goals for helping others. Beginning after school on Friday, May 17, fourth-graders dressed as chefs will offer fresh cooking herbs from the BES garden coupled with student-suggested recipes to parents and guardians during student pickup. At the same time, donations will be accepted to benefit GCISD students in need. Click here to learn how the donations will help students in the GCISD community.

    LEAD 2021: O.C. Taylor second-graders participate in mock city council
    Surrounded by a group of O.C. Taylor “concerned citizens,” Colleyville Mayor David Kelly called the meeting to order. But this wasn’t City Hall and it wasn’t the City Council Chambers; it was the school’s library, with school staff playing the roles of council members and a citizen group comprised of energetic second-graders.     CES teacher selected to participate in global education institute
    Kim Lackey, GCISD Gifted and Talented Specialist and GHS World Quest Sponsor, was chosen by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA) to attend the ninth-annual Great Decisions Institute this summer at New York University. The Foreign Policy Association will host the three-day Institute this summer for teachers who were selected based on their commitment to international education.     TAME Trailblazer visits Cannon Elementary
    Students at Cannon Elementary were treated to a special visit from the TAME (Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering) Trailblazer mobile interactive science and engineering museum on April 30. The Trailblazer is a 40-foot exhibit trailer that houses a variety of engineering and science exhibits for students in third through seventh grades.     Under the guidance of the district’s strategic plan, LEAD 2021, the Advanced Academics Department is excited to announce many program updates for the 2013-2014 school year. Classes will be offered for students in grades K-8 in all areas including academic, physical fitness and fine arts. Classes are one week for three hours per day, either in the morning or afternoon. This year's theme is "Summer Enrichment Express...Get On Board!" For registration forms, as well as to see the Enrichment art contest winners, click here.

    10 GCISD students named National Merit Finalists
    Colleyville Heritage High School and Grapevine High School will each send five students to the next level of achievement in the National Merit Scholars Program. To see which students have been named National Merit Finalists, click here

    GCISD announces Employees of the Year
    Fourth-Grade Silver Lake Elementary School Teacher Sheri Thompson was named Elementary Teacher of the Year. Seventh-Grade Cross Timbers Middle School Teacher Sarah King was named Secondary Teacher of the Year.     CHHS and GHS earn Gold 'Best High School' Ranking 
    Both GCISD high schools have once again made the U.S. News & World Report rankings of the Best High Schools. The magazine evaluated 21,035 public high schools across the nation to compile the 2013 rankings, which are based on state proficiency standards and how well the school prepares students for college. Colleyville Heritage High School is listed at #246 and Grapevine High School is #432 nationally -- rankings that earned both high schools Gold Level Recognition in the report.     Elementary campuses awarded in 2013 Healthier U.S. Schools Challenge
    The GCISD Board of Trustees recently recognized all 11 of the district’s elementary campuses as award winners in the 2013 Healthier U.S. Schools Challenge. The award, presented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, recognizes schools and districts that provide students with higher-quality meals and promote a school environment that encourages healthy and active lifestyles. Of the more than 101,000 schools in the country that participated, fewer than 5,100 won awards. To read what Nutritional Services Director Julie Telesca said about the award, click here.
     
    Superintendent announces Educator Ethics Training

    LEAD 2021: A Year in the Life of a PBL, Chapter 3: Shelter and Electricity 
    To gain a better understanding of how Project-Based Learning (PBL) works, district writers are following one GCISD teacher as she incorporates a yearlong PBL activity to cover all areas of the curriculum. Laura Byno, who teaches eighth-grade science at Grapevine Middle School (GMS), is guiding her students through this learner-driven process with help from instructional coaches Wendy Howe and Phillip Lentz.     Heritage Elementary inducts 33 students into honor society 
    Heritage Elementary School (HES) inducted 33 students into the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) during a ceremony on Thursday in the school's cafeteria. These students are laying a new foundation of leadership at HES as the first group of inductees for their NEHS chapter, and the first for GCISD. More than just an honor roll, NEHS engages its members in service activities and leadership development that help strengthen the programs for all students at the school and improve life in the community.     CHHS student in New York for national YEA! competition
    Colleyville Heritage High School student Rowan Konda is in Rochester, NY, sharing his business concept at a national competition as part of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) Program. Inspired by a damaging hail storm seve to find out how Rowan qualified for nationals! ral years ago, Rowan has designed a portable hail cover for cars called "OMG!Hail Covers." He has taken his idea to New York in hopes of winning an entrepreneurial scholarship. Click here

    School's new staff member is big dog on campus 
    Heritage Elementary School (HES) welcomed a new staff member this semester and, although he is different than all the other teachers, he seems to be finding his place in the pack. This spring, HES Counselor Regina Rockwood introduced Oliver Twist, a therapy dog, to the students and staff at the school.     Legislator plans town hall meeting tonight to discuss education
    State Rep. Giovanni Capriglione will host a town hall meeting tonight from 6-7 p.m. at Southlake Town Hall, 1400 Main Street in Southlake. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this town hall to discuss education funding, accountability, curriculum issues and other education-related topics.
     
    GCISD theatre students recognized at regional level
    Theatre groups from both Colleyville Heritage High School and Grapevine High School have been nominated for spring recognition programs in the region. Dallas Summer Musical Theatre Awards is recognizing CHHS for the student work in "Hairspray" and "Into the Woods" while the Betty Lynn Buckley Award program is recognizing GHS for the student work in "Chicago."     Community invited to school finance presentation
    GCISD Superintendent Dr. Robin Ryan will visit O.C. Taylor Elementary School from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, to share information about Texas school finance. In his presentation, Dr. Ryan will discuss the current state of school finance and how the decisions being made in Austin have impacted GCISD and will continue to impact the district in upcoming years. The presentation is hosted jointly by Grapevine Elementary, Heritage Elementary and O.C. Taylor Elementary.
     
    Education Foundation scholarship applications available
    Scholarship applications for this year are now available hereLast year, the GCISD Education Foundation awarded more than $25,000 in scholarships to students at CHHS and GHS. This is the last week to apply, as applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, April 19.

    School lunch prices increasing for 2013-2014
    Student lunch prices will increase beginning with the 2013-2014 school year to meet USDA regulations. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires school districts to annually assess meal prices. To meet the criteria outline in the Act, the new lunch prices for the 2013-2014 will be $2.25 for K-6 students, $2.45 for 9-12 students and $3.05 for adults. Breakfast prices also will increase to $1.10 for all students. 
     
    Tuition-Based Pre-K Survey
    GCISD is studying the possibility of establishing a tuition-based pre-kindergarten program to serve our community. To effectively evaluate the feasibility of such a program, we need to hear from parents of young families. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey to assist in the decision-making process. Additionally, if you know of anyone who will have a pre-K student in the next few years, please encourage them to take the survey.

    GHS girls soccer playoffs 
    Come cheer on the GHS Lady Mustang soccer team as they continue their run in the playoffs. They will take on Midlothian on Friday, April 5, at 6 p.m. at Southlake Carroll. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Good luck Lady Mustangs! 
     
    Traffic pattern change this weekend
    The DFW Connector informed GCISD of a major traffic switch occurring this weekend and we wanted to pass it along to all parents, staff, students and community members. The upcoming traffic switch will begin this Friday, April 5 at 8 p.m. Click here for the specific information from DFW Connector.
     
    Legislators plan upcoming town hall meetings to discuss education
    Sen. Wendy Davis announced two town hall meetings this weekend to discuss public and higher education in Texas, as well as current proposals in the Legislature. The first town hall is Saturday, April 6, at 9:30 a.m. in Arlington at the Mac Bernd Professional Development Center (Arlington ISD), 1111 W. Arbrook Blvd. Arlington, TX 76015. The second is later that afternoon at 2 p.m. in Fort Worth at Nicholas Martin Hall on the campus of Texas Wesleyan University, 1309 Wesleyan St., Ft. Worth, TX 76105. Additionally, Rep. Giovanni Capriglione will host a town hall meeting, Friday, April 12 from 6-7 p.m. at Southlake Town Hall, 1400 Main Street, Southlake, TX 76092. The public is invited and encouraged to attend one of these meetings to discuss education funding, accountability, curriculum issues and other education-related topics. 
     
    Summer Enrichment 2013
    Registration forms are now available for Summer Enrichment 2013. Classes will be offered for students in grades K-8 in all areas including academic, physical fitness and fine arts. Classes are one week for three hours per day, either in the morning or afternoon. This year's theme is "Summer Enrichment Express...Get On Board!"     School lunch prices increasing for 2013-2014
    Student lunch prices will increase beginning with the 2013-2014 school year to meet USDA regulations. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires school districts to annually assess meal prices with the end goal of all paid lunch prices at least equaling the free reimbursement rate minus the paid reimbursement rate. The US Department of Agriculture currently reimburses Grapevine-Colleyville ISD $2.88 for free lunches. The new lunch prices for the 2013-2014 will be $2.25 for K-6 students and $2.45 for 9-12 students and $3.05 for adults. Breakfast prices will also increase to $1.10 for all students. 
     
    GCISD's newest school named: iUniversity Prep
    During the March meeting, the GCISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the naming of GCISD’s newest school: iUniversity Prep, a Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Virtual Academy. The district's virtual school is scheduled to open for enrollment this spring with classes starting with the fall 2013 semester. Dr. Kaye Rogers, a former Colleyville Heritage High School administrator who has been leading a virtual school for the past six years, also has been named director of GCISD's virtual academy.     Tuition-Based Pre-K Survey
    GCISD is studying the possibility of establishing a tuition-based pre-kindergarten program to serve our community. To effectively evaluate the feasability of such a program, we need to hear from parents of young families. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey to assist in the decision-making process. Additionally, if you know of anyone who will have a pre-K student in the next few years, please encourage them to take the survey.
     
    Education Foundation scholarship applications available
    Scholarship applications for this year are now available here. Last year, the GCISD Education Foundation awarded more than $25,000 in scholarships to students at CHHS and GHS. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, April 19.

    CHHS and GHS girls soccer playoffs

    Board certifies unopposed candidates, cancels May election 
    On Monday, March 25, 2013, the GCISD Board of Trustees voted to approve the Order of Cancellation for the May 11, 2013, General Election of Trustees since both candidates are unopposed. As a result, candidates and incumbents Karen Deakin, Place 3, and Lisa Pardo, Place 4, were certified as unopposed and, therefore, elected to a subsequent three-year term. On Election Day, a copy of the Order of Cancellation will be placed at each polling site that would have been used for the election.
     
    Transfer deadline Monday, April 1
    Transfer requests are currently being accepted through 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 1. Students already in the district (intradistrict) may apply to transfer schools in accordance with district-established criteria. The district also has a new limited open enrollment policy, which allows students who currently live in the cities of Grapevine and Colleyville but not within GCISD boundaries (interdistrict) to apply to attend designated GCISD schools.  Click here to find the forms for both interdistrict and intradistrict transfers, as well as the criteria used when considering an application.

    CHHS freshman named All-State Champion by TMSCA 
    Colleyville Heritage High School ninth-grade student Lan Luo competed at the State Championship High School TMSCA meet in San Antonio on March 16, placing first and earning the title of Texas All-State Champion in the General Math Competition. In addition, Lan was named the All-State Champion in the Number Sense Competition. He was also awarded second place in the Calculator Competition. Click here to read more! 
     
    GHS teacher Jane Boyd named to TFA Hall of Fame 
    Twenty-nine years as a speech teacher and debate coach and 25 years at Grapevine High School (GHS) has brought a plethora of memories, experiences and honors to Jane Boyd. None have meant more than being named to the Texas Forensic Association (TFA) Hall of Fame at the TFA State Tournament on March 9. Boyd will be formally inducted during the TFA State Convention in October. Click here to read more.

    GCISD announces new virtual academy
    Starting later this spring 2013, students across the state of Texas may apply for admission to GCISD's new virtual school. This program is a state-accredited, college prep academy in GCISD that will combine the flexibility of online instruction with the availability of face-to-face academic support from site-based, highly qualified teachers. This unique program will provide rigorous coursework in a flexible format, with the communications and assessments taking place online. While the district is still finalizing the official name of this new school, planning and development is well underway.     GCISD Nutrition Services launches new app
    GCISD parents now can access their child’s lunch accounts and menus on the go with a new mobile app designed specifically for GCISD Nutrition Services.This new app, called the Nutrislice Menu App, will connect families to school menus, where they can view the menu options available in GCISD cafeterias as well as nutrition values and possible allergen alerts.
