The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for not only recognition, but also scholarships. Students enter this competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Across the U.S., 50,000 students with the highest scores qualify for recognition in the program. In September, these students are notified as either Commended or National Merit Semifinalists--only about 16,000 students reach the Semifinalist level.
In February, 15,000 of the Semifinalists are announced as Finalists in the program. All winners of the scholarship awards are selected from the Finalist group. Students are evaluated based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments.
