  • GRAPEVINE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SELECTED AS ALL-STATE MUSICIANS

     

    Christopher Chwa and Dawson Grimes, members of the Grapevine High School Band will perform with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio, Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2017 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. These students were chosen for this prestigious honor through a competitive process held this year across the state at District, Region, and Area levels. Christopher is a student of Joseph Prescott, Dawson a student of Jeanene Johnson and they both perform at school under the direction of Shannon Gill who is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, a 12,000+ member organization headquartered in Austin. This is Christopher and Dawson’s first time to perform as a member of a TMEA All-State organization.

     

    High school students selected to perform in the All-State concerts have competed through several levels of auditions beginning in the fall of 2016 to qualify at the state level. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. 1,780 students are selected through a process that begins with over 68,000 students from around the state vying for this honor to perform in one of 15 ensembles (bands, orchestras, and choirs). Texas Music Educators Association sponsors the Texas All-State competition. This competitive process begins throughout the state in auditions hosted by 33 TMEA Regions. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advances from their Region to compete against musicians from other areas in seven TMEA Area competitions. The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area competitions qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State music group. Only the top 2.6% of musicians who initially audition become All-State musicians.

     

     

    These All-State students participate in three days of rehearsals directed by nationally-recognized conductors during the TMEA Clinic/Convention. Their performances for thousands of attendees bring this extraordinary event to a close.   • LONE STAR STATE SCHOOL COUNSELING CONFERENCE (LSSSCA) AWARD

     

    The LSSSCA Lonestar Committee would like to congratulate GHS for being a recipient of the 2016 BRONZE AWARD! The counseling team and administrator(s) will be recognized for this distinguished award at the Lone Star State School Counseling Conference (LSSSCA) Award Ceremony in January.   • ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM

     

    Through encouragement from his teacher Kristy Hansen, GHS student Kyle Bowman applied for the Crow Collection of Asian Art Artist Residency Program taking place over the winter break.
     
    Students completed a four-step application process for the program: a typed application, a letter of recommendation from myself in a sealed envelope, typed short answer questions, and an 8 1/2 x 11" artwork submittal.
     
    Kyle is 1 out of only 12 students in the DFW Metroplex to receive an invitation to participate in the Artist Residency Program from December 19, 2016 through December 21, 2016.  Working alongside artist Kankan Huang and Crow Collection Educators, Kyle will create work(s) of art through sculptural mold and casting processes with inspiration from Huang and community members' personal stories of Chinese New Year traditions.  These work(s) will be on view at the Crow Collection during the museum's Chinese New Year Celebration on January 28th.
     
    Very excited for Kyle with the accomplishment only a select few have the opportunity to experience. Excited teacher!!

    GHS has met state standards and received a 4 star Distinction Designation for meeting Academic Achievement in ELA, Math, and Science, as well as a distinction earned in post-secondary readiness.
