Helpful Hints

  1. Decide if you play better sitting or standing! Adjust the stand to your height before you begin playing.
  2. If you are a bell front brass player, turn at an angle so that your bell is not directly pointing to the judge.
  3. Brass players– remember to empty your water between each piece.
  4. Reed players –take the water out of your reed between each piece.
  5. Wind players –remember to use lots of air!
  6. Bring water into the room if you tend to get “dry mouth”.
  7. It is OK for you to play a starting note before each selection, if it's not as good as you like, play it again.
  8. You may hear different interpretations of the music in the warm-up area. Do not change how you are playing!!!
  9. Did you remember that you have to use lots of air?
  10. You have worked very hard to attend this audition. Go in the room with confidence and concentration and play your best.
  11. Remember it is an honor to even attend this tryout!Your goals will vary from player to player. Be sure you have realistic expectations! Play your best possible performance that day under pressure.
  12. If you make a mistake, keep going!!! Do not worry about the mistake, as this will cause you to make more mistakes. Keep your concentration on the music – not what the judge is thinking or writing.
  13. A good warm-up is crucial to a good performance. Warm up correctly and warm up at home  before you come to the audition. Do not over practice that day or you will be too tired to perform well. Warm up and play through your music – don’t “practice” on the day of the tryout!
  14. Did you know that you need more air when you are nervous? Take full, deep breaths every time. Deep breathing also helps you physically relax and you will play better!
  15. Take extra reeds, valve oil, your own music, your instrument, brains, confidence, pride, courtesy, respect and encouragement for each other.
