School Based Occupational TherapyOccupational Therapy in the school setting is a related service provided by therapists who are licensed by the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners. Federal and state laws mandate that occupational therapy services provided in the schools are educationally relevant. Occupational Therapists provide assistance to students already in special education, allowing them to access the general education curriculum and benefit from their specially designed Individual Education Plan (IEP). The Occupational Therapist works with the student and/or the educational staff to facilitate the acquisition of functional school skills or to provide accommodations which improve functional performance in the areas of fine motor, visual motor, self-help, and self-regulation skills. Intervention can occur in a variety of educational settings, using both direct and indirect service models.
