Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, a K-12 public school system in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, is making bold changes in the way we teach and the way students learn. In the second year of its 10-year strategic plan, the district is transforming its culture to provide the foundation that today’s 21st Century learners will need to be successful now and in life beyond high school.

GCISD’s strategic plan is called LEAD 2021, which stand for Leading Excellence-Action Driven. Through four core objectives – preparing students to be college and career ready, harnessing technology for learning, fostering citizenship and mutual respect, and building community involvement – the district is creating an innovative environment where students are inspired, encouraged and supported.

One of the exciting new initiatives of LEAD 2021 is the digital classroom project. We started the 2012-2013 school year with 125 classrooms designated for digital learning, with the increased expectations of students using technology to collaborate, solve problems, communicate and become independent and interdependent thinkers. More digital classrooms will be added throughout the year.

GCISD maintains a long-standing commitment to educational excellence for all children. Building on its mission to be The BEST, the district continues increasing the level of rigor in classrooms to address expectations of the community and better prepare students for success in college and their future careers.

GCISD has 11 National Blue Ribbon Schools, including Heritage Elementary School, which earned the honor under the “No Child Left Behind” initiative. Both high schools earned places on U.S. News and Newsweek’s Best High Schools lists and four elementary schools were named to the 2011 National Center for Education Achievement's Higher Performing Schools List.

In GCISD, we employ multiple measures to assess student progress, such as scores on the ACT and SAT college readiness exams. On the most recent results, GCISD student composite scores were significantly higher on the ACT and SAT than the scores at both the state and national averages on those assessments, which indicates a high level of college readiness. In addition, the number of students taking the ACT increased. Each year, GCISD graduates attend respected universities throughout the country, from Harvard to Stanford and many others in between.

Educators at GCISD are among the best and have been finalists for Presidential honors, invited to attend Supreme Court Summer Institute, and recognized by their peer organizations for excellence. Students earn top honors in math and science competitions, robotics, leadership, debate and speech, music and athletics, and literacy, just to name a few. Ten students have been named National Merit Finalists for the current year, and Cross Timbers Middle School’s Future Problem Solving Team “Got Ca$h” earned the title of International Grand Champion in recent competition.

GCISD also is recognized for excellence in its purchasing, financial and operational practices. Recently, the district’s Financial Services department received recognition for its high level of transparency, earning a 2012 Gold Leadership Circle Award from the Texas Comptroller's Office.

The success of GCISD students – past, present and future – begins at home with the continued support of parents and community. The district is fortunate to have strong partnerships with civic organizations and businesses in our local community. Through a new partnership for 2012-2013 with the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce, GCISD is offering a unique opportunity to students who want to learn more about business strategies. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA), connects students with business leaders who will guide them through the process of starting their own business. GCISD currently is one of only two districts in the state to participate in this program.

Additional Facts About GCISD
  • Nine GCISD campuses met standards on the 2012 Adequate Yearly Progress Report (AYP) released by the Texas Education Agency.
  • Colleyville Heritage High School was awarded the 2011 College Readiness Award from the Texas ACT Council for an increase in the amount of students taking the ACT over the last five years.
  • GCISD  practices environmental responsibility through programs and procedures geared toward conservation, recycling and efficient operations. These include regulating temperatures in buildings throughout the district and increasing temperatures on nights and weekends when the buildings are not in use, sustaining a districtwide recycling effort, Green Teams at every campus and facility, no idling signs at each campus, and monitoring water usage through irrigation controls and native landscaping.
  • Four GCISD schools have been named to the 2011 National Center for Education Achievement's Higher Performing Schools List . Those schools are Colleyville Heritage High School, Colleyville Middle School, O.C. Taylor Elementary and Timberline Elementary. According to the NCEA, schools on the list consistently have more success in preparing students for college and careers than their peers that serve similar student populations. In Texas only 10% of schools are identified as Higher Performing Schools by the organization. 
  • Ten students have been named 2012 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Program,  four students have been recognized as National Achievement Scholars by the National Achievement Scholarship Program, and nine students are award recipients from the National Hispanic Recognition Program.  In addition, 40 were named National Merit Commended Students.
  • The average AP exam score for GCISD students was 3.15, well above the state average of 2.56 and the national average of 2.89. Sixty-nine percent of GCISD test-takers scored a three or higher on one or more exams, and 39% scored a four or higher on one or more exams.
