Summer Reading 2013

Summer reading is the most important activity your child can do to enhance academic achievement. Reading for pleasure strengthens students' understanding of concepts across curriculum areas. Reading builds vocabulary, comprehension, and reading rate. Students should expect to have opportunities to discuss and write about their summer reading during the first few weeks of the fall semester.

The GCISD language arts department, grades K-12, requires students to read at least two books during the summer months. PreAP/AP classes may require specific books which can be found on the campus websites.  We hope that students will choose to read additional books for enjoyment during the summer. The opportunity to select one's own reading is a first step to becoming a life-long reader. Your help in ensuring quality choices for reading will help your child become a better reader.

The elementary and middle school lists below are based on the Texas Library Association reading lists for grades K-8.  Our librarians have annotated the lists to inform parents of books that may be more suited for older children within the grade level range recommended.  We highly encourage parents to monitor the choices of books their students select to read to be sure that they are suitable for their age, maturity level, and family values.  It is a beneficial practice for parents to read the same book as their child and to have discussions about the content, the author's purpose, and the literary techniques the author uses.  Enjoy reading this summer!
