I expect students in my classroom to pursue education like scholars. A scholar learns for the sake of learning – not simply because he or she wants to make an A or pass the test. Such a student will demonstrate academic honesty at all times out of respect for the ideas and accomplishments of others, not simply to avoid getting a zero. Students who meet my expectations realize that success is a choice. Stated more simply, I expect students to be prepared, be attentive, and be respectful. Along those lines: our classroom needs to be a place where students can express opinions in a safe environment. Any verbal abuse based on race, gender, sexual orientation, political alignment, religion, mental facility, and/or level of income will not be tolerated. Words such as “retarded” and “gay” will likewise not be tolerated. Students will receive one warning. After continued use, students will receive a referral. |
