Grapvine-Colleyville Independent School District
Heritage Elementary School

Welcome to Fourth Grade! We are doing many exciting things this year. Our main subjects of study are Language Arts (Reading, Writing, and Spelling), Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Language Arts
The children participate in literature circles, called Book Club. Each classroom reads two different books at one time and shares and compares things taking place in each book. Throughout the school year, fourth grade will be taking novel approaches to book reports. Instead of traditional book reports, students will use higher level thinking skills to present book reports in the form of Book in the Bag, travel brochures, dioramas, and costumes.

Fourth graders learn many lessons in writing -- Writing What You Know, Exploding the Moment, Freezing Time, and Showing Not Telling, just to name a few! By the end of the year, they are writing experts!

Math
There are many exciting skills we will be learning this year. Some are multiplication, division, and decimals. We also focus on problem solving, measurement, and fractions. The students participate in many hands on activities to explore the concepts. Look for our symmetry activities in the hallway when we begin geometry!

Science
This year, the fourth grade students will be going on an overnight camping trip to Camp Carter, a YMCA camp in Fort Worth, Texas. Camp Carter provides outdoor education classes with hands-on, experienced-based learning. Classes include Aquatic Study, Nature Journaling, and Orienteering. Social Studies
Texas History is the focus of Social Studies this year. This includes the regions of Texas, cultural groups, and economy. We will examine the war for Texas' Independence, annexation to the US, the Civil War’s effect on Texas, and identify many notable figures throughout Texas History.
