ENDOWMENTS
& PLANNED GIVING
Endowment gifts are invested and allowed to grow so that eventually,
the fund produces enough income to cover annual grants. Endowment gifts
allow organizations to plan in a consistent and coherent way. It makes
it possible for an organization to function on a higher administrative
and programmatic level.
Gifts of $10,000 or more may be established as endowment funds; only
the interest is distributed. This means the initial contribution gives
annually through earned interest. Family members may be memorialized,
such as the $50,000 Helen Harbison Lucas Endowment given by James Lucas,
which was designated to annually recognize the Elementary Teacher of the
year with a $2,500 award.
Most endowments are built from bequests and gifts, which support the
foundation and allow grants to be made in perpetuity. Gifts of assets,
as well as income may be made, which often allow the donor tax advantages.
Planned giving includes gifts through wills, trusts, life insurance and
other options recommended by an estate planner.
