of Homework
Homework may be any preparation, work or activity that a pupil does on non-school
time at the request or with the consent of his or her teacher. Homework
Position Statement
Homework in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District is an
essential extension of the learning process for each student. It should
reinforce and extend classroom activities in a way that:

ensures a meaningful application of knowledge;
- communicates
clear expectations to students and parents;
- respects
time appropriateness for each grade level;
- utilizes
study and time management skills;
- provides
timely feedback to students; and
- promotes
a link between school and home.
Our
goal is that students view learning as a lifelong process enabling them
to achieve their maximum potential and meet future challenges.
Guidelines
for Teachers
Teachers should:
- clearly
communicate policies, expectations and available resources to parents.
- clearly
communicate the purpose of the homework assignments to students.
- assign
homework that serves as a link between knowledge and application.
- assign
homework which is relevant to the learning objectives.
- assign
homework which reinforces learning in progress, not practice on
learning not yet taught or understood.
- provide
timely feedback and return all homework.
- give
appropriate advance notice of homework assignments, though some
assignments are assigned daily.
- be
sensitive to the time required to complete an assignment.
- make
every effort to coordinate deadlines for major assignments with other
teachers/calendar events.
- consider
the cost and availability of materials and resources.
Guidelines
for Parents
Parents should:
- provide
a time and a place which is conducive to learning.
- supervise
homework to ensure completion.
- be
aware of school homework practices.
- offer
encouragement regularly and assistance only when needed.
- help
support students' organization of time and materials.
- monitor
long-term projects.
- contact
the teacher when the student consistently has problems understanding
or completing homework.
Guidelines
for Students
Students should:
- be
aware of the effect of homework on their mastery of skills and on their
skills and on their grades.
- make
every effort to complete homework assignments.
- reserve
enough time in their schedule to complete their homework.
- study
in a place which is conducive to learning.
- strive
to complete all assignments independently, but should be responsible
for seeking help when needed.
- maintain
a written record of assignments due.
- consult
the teacher if an assignment is not understood.
Suggested Time Frames

Unfinished
classwork is not included in the suggested time frames. If your student
consistently requires more time than is suggested, contact the teacher.
