Kindergarten - Grade Five GCISD offers a balanced literacy program which integrates the teaching of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Daily classroom activities include direct instruction in basic skills and strategies which ensure that students will become competent readers and writers. Kindergarten - Grade Five GCISD offers Spanish as a second language to all students at the elementary level. Trained teachers provide a rich variety of interactive experiences which allow students to begin acquiring oral proficiency in the target language and develop an understanding of the cultures of Hispanic speaking countries. | Grades Six - Eight GCISD requires both reading and language arts in grades six and seven. Instructional emphasis is placed on developing critical reading strategies, composition development with emphasis on language concepts and sentence structure, literary analysis, and research. In eighth grade students take an English course which combines a study of literature with composition. Two electives in reading are offered to support and enrich students' skills in vocabulary and comprehension. Course Offerings:
Other elective opportunities at the middle school level in the area of language arts include courses in speech and journalism. In Speech, students develop skills in speech communication in preparation for courses offered at the secondary level. In Journalism, students learn basics of journalism, news reporting, layout, design and production of the school yearbook.

Grades Six - Eight GCISD offers Exploratory Language in grade six followed by a full year of academic foreign language study in Spanish, French, or German in grade eight. The Level I course offered in grade eight meets one of the three years of credit required for high school graduation. Language offerings may vary by campus.

Grades 9 - 12 GCISD offers a full four year program for students interested in journalism. Each course provides fundamentals of journalistic research, writing, and design with authentic applications in production and publication. Course offerings follow.

Grades 9 - 12 GCISD offers a full four year program for students in the area of speech and debate. Course content ranges from the fundamentals of effective communication to full competitive speech opportunities. One semester of speech is required for graduation.

Grades 9 - 12 GCISD offers a full four year program in classical and contemporary languages. A sequential program emphasizing communication, culture, cross-curricular connections, comparisons, and community applications guides the course of study in the target language. All students wishing to receive an academic diploma are required to complete three years of language study in one language other than English. Course offering follow.
