on a smaller scale and may find other ways to contribute, such

| MENTORSHIP
PROGRAM |
| Individuals
from the community may serve as an adult role model and friend to
one student needing additional attention through the mentorship program.
Mentors come to school once a week to meet or have lunch with their
student. Although the program is not necessarily tutorial, a student's
grades may go up as a result of the program. The
goals of the program are to increase student success, motivate students
to improve grades, behavior or attendance, to decrease the dropout
rate and to involve the community in the school.
Teachers,
counselors, principals or parents may recommend students for the
program. Students needing mentors do not fit a particular mold.
They come from both single parent homes and two parent families.
Mentor applicants fill out an application form and participate in
an initial interview. Following a criminal background check, mentors
will participate in an orientation and training session. Then mentors
are matched by campus staff and begin meeting with their student.
At most campuses, the initial meeting between mentor and student
takes place at a pizza luncheon in a classroom or special section
of the cafeteria with other new mentor/student pairs. At this time
the mentor and student will set a day and time to meet at lease
twice a month. |
