    Schools closed for Spring Break and first Bad Weather Makeup Day

    Schools and administrative offices will be closed March 17-21 for Spring Break, as noted on the 2007- 08 Student Teacher Calendar. Students will get an additional day off on Monday, March 24 for one of two designated Bad Weather Makeup Days. The second Bad Weather Makeup Day is set for Thursday, June 5th.

    Administrative offices will remain open for the Bad Weather Makeup Days.

    Middle school science showcase set

    The annual Science Showcase for GCISD middle school students will be April 1 at the Colleyville Center, 5301 Riverwalk Drive. Sponsored by The Star- Telegram, the event features student science projects in the categories of Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science.

    First, second, third and honorable mention awards will be given for each grade level in each of the three categories. In addition, awards will be given to the middle school with the most overall winners and the middle school with the highest percentage of parents in attendance.

    Publc viewing of the the projects will be from 3:30-6 p.m. with the awards ceremony at 6 p.m.

    Sunny day sets the scene for a great Special Olympics

    Approximately 330 athletes from eight school districts around the area competed in a variety of events on March 12 at the annual GCISD Special Olympics Track Meet at Mustang-Panther Stadium. Participating districts included GCISD, Keller ISD, Venus ISD, Little Elm ISD, Birdville ISD, Mansfield ISD, Carroll ISD and Arlington ISD.

    Volunteers who helped with the meet include 350 GCISD secondary student volunteers, members of the Grapevine Rotary, National Charity League, Winfree Academy, and Grapevine Runners and Walkers Club, as well as GCISD employees and parents.

    Sponsors for the event include Baylor Regional Medical Center of Grapevine, Colleyville Woman's Club, Grapevine Rotary Club, National Charity League, Glen and Gail Christensen, Chick-Fil-A Southlake and Krispy Kreme. Special thanks to GCISD Facilities Services, Target of Grapevine, Chick-Fil-A Grapevine, Valley View Productions, Grapevine Police Department, Colleyville Police Department, Jessica Fehmel, GCISD Special Services Center. Dr. Peggy Wheaton, Jim Chadwell, Toni Byam, CHHS, and all the teachers, staff, coaches and students who participated.

    Eight DI teams advance to state

    Eight teams of GCISD students will participate in the state Destination Imagination Tournament being held April 4-5 in Round Rock. First place teams from Colleyville Elementary, Colleyville Middle, Grapevine Elementary, Grapevine High, as well as two second- place teams from Dove Elementary and O.C. Taylor Elementary.

    Organizations partner to say thank you to teachers

    The National Education Association and the National Parent Teacher Association are partnering to create the "Nation's Largest Teacher Thank You Card."

    GCISD challenges Grapevine Police in charity basketball game

    The community is invited to cheer on their favorite team as GCISD employees take on members of the Grapevine Police Department in a charity basketball game benefiting GRACE and Foundation56. The game begins at 7 p.m. March 27 in the Grapevine High School Gym 1 and is hosted by GCISD's Classes After Classes program.

    Adult admission is $2, and students are asked to bring a canned food item for admission. Canned goods will be donated to GRACE. All money raised will benefit Foundation56, the personal foundation of Dallas Cowboys linebacker Bradie James that promotes breast cancer awareness and youth- centered initiatives that encourage positive youth development. Make plans to come out and enjoy a friendly rivalry while supporting two great causes!
