What’s Happening This Week

O.C. Tayor Elementary Career Week
Students at O.C. Taylor Elementary will hear about various careers as part of Career Week April 23-27. Parents and community volunteers will speak with students about their respective careers. Special guests include TV reporter Janet St. James and retired baseball star Rusty Greer. Students also will make posters and write essays about the theme, “What I Want to be When I Grow Up.” Information:  817-305-4870.

• Foundation to honor grant recipients
The Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation will honor the 2007 grant recipients at a reception at 6:15 p.m. April 23 in the lobby of the GCISD Administration Building. The Board of Trustees will also recognize the recipients during the regular meeting at 7 p.m. Information: 817-251-5480.

• GCISD Board of Trustees meeting
The Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Board of Trustees will meet for the regular monthly meeting on April 23 at the GCISD Administration Building, 3051 Ira E. Woods Avenue in Grapevine. Open session begins at 7 p.m. Information: 817-251-5503.

• GCISD Percussion Club hosts master class
A master class on the topic of Brazilian drums will be offered from 4-5:30 p.m. April 26 in the Colleyville Heritage High Band Hall. The GCISD Percussion Club is hosting the class, which features award-winning percussion clinician and educator Dan Neimeyer. All GCISD percussion students in grades 6-12 are encouraged to attend. • GCISD Video Festival Awards
An awards ceremony announcing winners in the 5th Annual GCISD Video Festival will be 6:30 p.m. April 26 at the Metro Cinema in Colleyville. The event is free to the public. • Bear Creek Elementary Career Day
Students at Bear Creek Elementary will hear about various careers as part of Career Day on April 27. About 115 parents and community volunteers will speak with students at each grade level throughout the day. Information: 817-305-4860.

• Deadline this week for CTMS senior scholarship applications
Any GCISD graduating seniors who completed the eighth grade at Cross Timbers Middle School are eligible for a scholarship sponsored by the Cross Timbers PTA. Applications are available from the high school counselors and must be returned by April 27. Information: 817-251-5320.

• Deadline this week for BES senior scholarship applications
Any GCISD graduating seniors who attended Bransford Elementary for at least one full academic year are eligible for one of two scholarships sponsored by the Bransford PTA. The scholarships will recognize students with superior achievement in citizenship, leadership and academics. Applications are available from the high school counselors and must be returned by 4 p.m. April 27. Information: 817-305-4930.

Upcoming Calendar Items
• HMS Aloha Day
Heritage Middle School students will celebrate Aloha Day during lunch periods May 3. Students and staff will dress in their favorite school-approved beach attire and enjoy picnic-style lunches of hamburgers, hot dogs and sides. Prizes will be awarded for various categories including best dressed. Aloha Day is a project of cafeteria manager Melody Trent. Information: 817-251-5503.

• GCISD Summer Enrichment
Registration is ongoing for GCISD’s Summer Enrichment program, which begins June 4 for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. The program, “Explore and Discover Summer,” offers a variety of classes including fine arts, cooking, cultural studies, math and science, social skills, sports/recreation and technology. There are six, one-week courses offered, with both morning and afternoon classes available. Awards and Announcements
• GMS nurse earns regional recognition
Grapevine Middle School nurse Mary Callahan has been selected as the Region XI School Nurse of the Year. The honor was announced Saturday at the annual spring conference of the Region XI School Nurses Association, an affiliate of the Texas School Nurses Organization. She will now be nominated for the Texas School Nurse of the Year Award to be announced in November. Callahan has been a school nurse for 25 years, with 17 of those in GCISD. She was named GCISD’s first School Nurse of the Year for 2005-2006. Information: 817-251-5503.

• Students honored by Colleyville Woman’s Club for volunteer service
GCISD students were among those honored Sunday during the 2006-2007 Youth Volunteer Service Awards ceremony of The Colleyville Woman’s Club. Four GCISD students earned the President’s Award, which is the highest award honoring youth who demonstrate outstanding community service. President’s Award winners are: Emily Anderson, Colleyville Heritage High; Sara Kabani, Grapevine Elementary; Jordan Readicker, Grapevine High; and Eugene Sohn, CHHS. Mariah Mullins of GHS was honored with the Circle of Hope Award for demonstrating meritorious community service. Thirteen GCISD students received Certificate of Merit Awards for volunteering in the community. Merit Award winners are: Kathleen Armitage, GHS; Gabriella Balli, Colleyville Middle; Courtenay Cochran, GHS; Beau Harriman, CMS; Haley Harriman, CMS; Suzanne Harriman, CMS; Kathryn Poettcker, CHHS; Hillary Rosenjack, CMS; Alex Scheiwe, CHHS; Soumya Sunkara, CHHS; Rachel Thompson, Heritage Middle; Quinn Tookey, CMS; and Kristin Wylie, CMS.

• Student artists earn medals in state contest
Students from Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine high schools earned medals in the State Visual Art Scholastic Event recently in Houston. State medal winners are: from CHHS, Krystal Agu, Emily Bass, Yeani Choi, Channing Fawcett, Ryan Filipski, Sydney Spann and Davis Rutkauskas; from GHS, Emily Smith and Hope Beasley. CHHS student Channing Fawcett also was awarded a Gold Seal Medal Award and her artwork will be part of a statewide exhibit next year.

In addition, five students had artwork exhibited as part of the 2007 Young Masters Juried Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. They were among 37 AP Studio Art students from 10 Dallas-area high schools chosen out of 262 entries submitted for exhibition. The exhibit is sponsored by Advanced Placement Strategies, Inc., and the O’Donnell Foundation. GCISD students included are: Emily Bass, Tim Gwartney, Dave Rutkauskas and Kittie Peters, all of CHHS; and Aubrey McDonald of GHS. Their artwork can be viewed online at www.apstrategies.org.

GCISD Council of PTAs has announced its official slate of officers for the 2007-2008 election. The proposed candidates are:  Jan Williams, first vice president (membership); Toni Oyler, second vice president (programs); Marty Payton, third vice president (budget and finance); Janel Gammill, fourth vice president (communications); Darlene Bodish, secretary; and Vince Rosen, treasurer. The office of president is currently open and anyone interested should contact Debra Caffey. The Council will vote on this slate during the general meeting at 9 a.m. May 9 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 5312 Bransford Road in Colleyville.
