Happening This Week
• February 8 – Silverlake Elementary “We Love
Math” Family Math Night – 6:30-7:30 p.m. Parents are
invited to come with their children and participate in a fun evening
of math activities.
•
February 8 – Dove Elementary Science Literacy Night –
6 p.m. The evening will begin with a presentation from Mad Science.
Following the performance, students and parents are invited to participate
in science activity centers throughout the school. Parents may also
attend mini-seminars designed to help improve their students’
reading comprehension, particularly through science-related texts.
Each child will receive a goodie bag and several door prizes will
be awarded.

February 8 – Heritage Elementary PTA presentation –
9 a.m. – school cafeteria. Child nutritionist, Dr. Theresa
Cook, will present information to helping families make healthy
eating choices.

February 9 – Heritage Elementary Dad’s Club –
Donuts for Dads – 7:30 – 8 a.m. in the school cafeteria

February 9 – Dove Elementary – Muffins with Mom - 7:30
a.m. -The smell of muffins is in the air as Dove prepares for its
annual Muffins with Moms. Every student is encouraged to bring their
mom, grandmother, aunt or female relatives to enjoy this tasty treat
and share in the fun with their friends.

Awards and Announcements
• GC Education Foundation awards more than $22,000
to GCISD campuses
On Feb. 2, the Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation’s
grant prize patrol awarded funds for 16 GCISD projects totaling
$22,739. In an atmosphere of excitement with balloons and oversized
checks, teachers at nine campuses were surprised in their classrooms
and proclaimed winners. To date for the 2006-07 school year, the
Education Foundation has awarded $83,687 to fund 66 projects on
all GCISD campuses.

Last chance to order wall tiles
Grapevine High School’s commemorative tile wall is now in
the main hallway. GHS alumni, current students, future students
and staff who would like to have a 6x8 tile to place on the school’s
wall in honor of the 100th year celebration are asked to create
non-copyrighted pictures and/or artwork on special paper provided
by the campus by March 9. The price for current students is $20
for all tiles. The cost for other individuals is $25 for the first
tile and $20 for additional tiles. For additional information, contact

Heritage Elementary student wins Hoop Shoot
Heritage Elementary fourth grade student, Ryan Manley, won the Regional
Hoop Shoot Competition on Saturday, January 27. He will advance
to the February 17 State Competition at Berkner High School in Richardson.

Bear Creek Elementary Spelling Bee Winners
Kathryn Bernhardt from Mrs. Hollinger's 5th grade class one first
place in the BCES annual spelling bee. The runner up was Mariam
Rajabali from Mrs. Love's 5th grade class.

Grapevine Middle School Student Wins State Wrestling
Grapevine Middle School student, Jacob Andrews, won the First Place
title in the State of Texas wrestling competition on Saturday, January
27 in Austin with USA Wrestling where he won his trophy for the
110 lb. weight class.
•
Pennies for Patients benefits Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
Colleyville Middle School completed the first week of collections
for Pennies for Patients and collected $2,500.00. Ms. Kelly Flagg's
6th period class collected $500. With two weeks left for the charity
drive, students are collecting daily for this project. The campus’
goal is $6000. The Pennies for Patients Campaign benefiting the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is being sponsored by the Colleyville
Middle School National Junior Honor Society.

Dove Elementary Spelling Bee Winners
Dove’s fourth and fifth grade students participated in their
third annual Spelling Bee on January 11. The competition was intense,
but Soham Majmudar was able to spell his way to a first place victory.
Soham will advance to the District’s spelling bee. After a
tie-breaker round against Matthew Whitman, Justina Samaan leapt
into second place and the role of alternate.
• Authors Visit Dove Elementary
The DES library sponsored two visiting authors, Tammy Carter Bronson
and Matthew Shane Bronson. The Bronsons discussed how they used
the writing process to create their books Polliwog, Tiny Snail,
and The Kaliedonotes and the Mixed-Up Orchestra, as well explaining
the publishing process. Mrs. Bronson also divulged her artistic
secrets for creating the illustrations in all three books. Through
Mr. Bronson’s creative guidance, kindergarten and first grade
students became the various musical instruments that comprise an
orchestra, while second through fifth grade students were amazed
by the number of rewrites that each author needed to complete before
each book was ready to be published. The authors were very impressed
with the excellent questions asked by the students. Nine lucky students
also won a contest to eat lunch with the authors: Holden Long, Ciera
Cisneros Magee, Grace Boulet, Hannah Long, Madison Teeter, Sarah
Kyser, Josie Moyer, Cara Kelley and Madeline Brown.

Bear Creek Elementary students perform on Fox 4 News
The Jumpin' Jammers jump rope team performed on Good Day Texas,
the Fox 4 morning show. John Wellman, a third grade teacher is the
team’s coach.

Grapevine Middle School Students win Lions Club poster contest
Four Grapevine Middle School students are the winners of a recent
drug awareness poster competition sponsored by the Grapevine Lions
Club. Students Ashley Ford won first place, and Taylor Davis won
second place for the sixth grade level. Mauricio Ramirez received
first place and Sam Allen won second place in the seventh/eighth
grade competition. The first place winners in both categories received
a $50 gift certificate and the second place winners received a $25
gift certificate from the Lions Club during their monthly meeting.
The students are under the direction of Grapevine Middle School
art teacher, Genie Morgan.
