Happening This Week
• Activities underway for Texas Public Schools Week
GCISD students and educators are celebrating Texas Public Schools
Week from March 5-9 with a variety of activities. Parents and community
members are invited to visit classrooms and participate in open
house events as part of this celebration. A complete list of campus-specific
activities is available from each campus or on campus web pages.

GCISD Driver’s Education
A second session of GCISD Driver’s Education has been added
and registration continues through April 12. The course runs Mondays
through Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. April 23-May 15 in room 106 at Grapevine
High School. Registration will be accepted from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
at the front offices of both Grapevine and Colleyville Heritage
high schools, as well as the Office of Continuing Education, 736
E. Northwest Highway in Grapevine. Cost is $315 for GCISD students
and $365 for out-of-district students, plus a $15 non-refundable

PTA/PTSA meetings
Grapevine High – General meeting and 2007-2008 officer elections,
6 p.m. March 5 in the Student Activity Center. GHS Open House event
will follow at 6:30 p.m.

Students to perform with Grammy-winning percussionist
The GCISD Percussion Club presents “Latin Funk,” a percussion
concert at 7 p.m. March 9 in the Colleyville Heritage High School
Auditorium. Middle and high school students will be performing with
Grammy Award-winning drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez,
a world-renowned percussion artist who has performed with musicians
including Carlos Santana, Steve Winwood and Tito Puente. A reception
will follow the concert. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at
the door or from any CHHS percussion student. Information: Jeff

Calendar Items
• GCISD Spring Break
GCISD campuses and administrative offices will be closed March 12-16
for spring break. Classes and office hours will resume Monday, March
19.

GCISD District Art Show highlights student artwork
Artwork created by students through GCISD will be on display March
19-30 throughout the GCISD Administration building, 3051 Ira E.
Woods Avenue in Grapevine, as part of the annual District Art Show.
Each year, GCISD features selected artwork of elementary, middle
and high school students, and one piece of student artwork is selected
for purchase by the District to be framed and added to permanent
display in the Administration building halls. Trustees will recognize
the winning artwork and student artist during their regular meeting
March 26. The public is invited to this free exhibit. Information:

and Announcements
• Student project selected by reading council
Second-grader Fernando Miranda of Timberline Elementary has been
selected as one of the winners of a contest sponsored by the Reading
Recovery Council of North America (RRCNA). The contest recognizes
the writing and illustrations of Reading Recovery and Descubriendo
la Lectura (DLL) students. Fernando’s winning entry was selected
to be reproduced as note cards for RRCNA. Fernando was a first-grade
student in Soñia Galvan’s classroom when he entered
the contest. His DLL teacher was Sandra Conner and principal is
Dr. Rob Thornell.

CMS yearbook staff honored
The Colleyville Middle School yearbook staff received an Award of
Excellence from Taylor Publishing for its accomplishments in yearbook
design and coverage. Yearbooks published by Taylor for the 2005-2006
school year were evaluated for cover design, theme development and
layout design. Taylor Publishing recognizes only the top 5 percent
of yearbooks staffs for outstanding yearbook achievement.

GCISD educator selected for Transatlantic Outreach Program
Grapevine High School social studies teacher Margaret Telford has
been selected to travel to Germany this summer as a member of one
of the Transatlantic Outreach Program’s study/travel tours.
The program offers all-expense-paid tours to Germany for social
studies educators who then contribute lesson plans to the program
and provide in-service training to other educators to teach about
modern Germany.
