What’s Happening This Week
- GCISD Board of Trustees meeting
The Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Board of Trustees will meet for its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Nov. 13 at the GCISD Administration Building, 3051 Ira E. Woods Ave. in Grapevine. Open session begins at 7 p.m. Information: 817-251-5503.
Grapevine High – General meeting, 7 p.m. Nov. 13 in the GHS Library. Program will be “College Planning,” an informative and interactive panel discussion regarding college preparations including financial planning, testing and admissions. Bear Creek Elementary – 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday on Nov. 13-17, with extended hours until 8 p.m. Nov. 16 for family night. Fourth-grade TAKS reading night will be Nov. 14. Fair closes at noon on Friday.Grapevine Elementary – 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday on Nov. 13-17, with extended hours until 6:45 p.m. Nov. 16. Fair closes at 1 p.m. Friday.
Second-graders at Heritage Elementary will celebrate Thanksgiving on Nov. 16 with a feast similar to that of the first one shared by the Indians and Pilgrims as part of a study of this historical event. Students will dress in period costumes they have created and will be treated to a puppet show and story time presented by the Grapevine Public Library. Information: 817-305-4820.
- Bransford hosting family literacy night
Bransford Elementary will host its annual Snuggle Up & Read Family Literacy Night from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 16. Students, parents and teachers are invited to come and read together at the school and participate in story times with celebrity readers including District coaches, principals and administrators. Refreshments of cookies and milk will be provided. Information: 817-305-4920.
Grandparents and special friends of Glenhope Elementary students are invited to come and visit classrooms to share stories of what life was like when they were in school as part of Heritage Day activities. This year ’s theme is “Proud to be an American” and the program will be a tribute to our country’s veterans. Assembly times are: 8:30-9:15 a.m. for kindergarten, second and fourth grades and 9:30 a.m. for first, third and fifth grades. Information: 817-251-5720.
Heritage Elementary fifth-graders will dress in colonial-period clothing on Nov. 17 as part of a study of colonial times. They will participate in a “Walk through Williamsburg” where parents will teach lessons that colonial children may have learned and will have a traditional colonial feast for lunch. Second- and third-grade students at Grapevine Elementary will present a special tribute to the Lone Star State and the local and national heritage of folk music and lore as part of Heritage Day activities beginning at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 17. Grandparents and special guests are invited to come for the tribute and then stay to visit classrooms. Information: 817-251-5735.
Upcoming Calendar Items
- GCISD closed for holiday break
All GCISD campuses and administrative offices will be closed from Nov. 20-24 for Thanksgiving break. All facilities will reopen on Nov. 27 and classes will resume as scheduled.
Awards and Announcements
- Bear Creek students win city poster contest
Jaymie Doss and Kiran Jiwani, students at Bear Creek Elementary, each won the grand prize for their grade level in the Euless Fire Prevention Poster Contest. The student ’s artwork was selected from entries submitted from the various schools and districts represented in the city of Euless. The students received a grand prize ribbon, gift package and certificate from the Euless mayor and city council. Jaymie is in first grade and Kiran is in fifth grade.
- CHHS debate coach named to state Hall of Fame
Cindi Timmons has been named to the inaugural class of the Texas Forensic Association ’s newly created Hall of Fame. Members were recognized for their service, leadership and excellence as debate coaches. Timmons teaches World Studies, serves as the National Honor Society sponsor and is the past director of Forensics at CHHS.
- CMS student serves as mayor for a day
Canyon Ingalsbe, a sixth-grader at Colleyville Middle School, served as Colleyville Mayor for a Day on Nov. 7. Canyon was selected based on his essay titled, “If I Could be Mayor for a Day.” As part of his mayoral duties, Canyon attended a City Council meeting and stood alongside Colleyville Mayor David Kelly to declare Nov. 7 as Colleyville Middle School Day.
- CHHS students nominated for national scholarship
Patrick Keenan and Lauren Riddle, seniors at Colleyville Heritage High, have been nominated by their peers for the National Honor Society national scholarship Program. Students are nominated for demonstrating excellence in scholarship, leadership, character and service. Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring.
- CHHS drum line makes strong showing
Members of the Colleyville Heritage drum line earned first-place honors for their solo, ensemble and marching performances during the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Senior Clay Aeschliman, tenor section leader, placed first for his tenor solo; the Small Ensemble, led by senior and bass section leader Al Quinones, placed first; and the drum line was awarded Best Tenor Section and overall third-place honors in the marching competition. The drum line will compete at the Lonestar Percussion Competition on Nov. 18 in Flower Mound.
