What’s Happening This Week

GCISD presents preview of state performance
The community is invited to a special in-district performance of the GCISD Extravaganza at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 in the Colleyville Heritage High School Auditorium. The 20-minute presentation will highlight the accomplishments of GCISD, showcase the cities and communities represented in the district and feature the talents of students from all grade levels. This program will be presented for state educators on Oct. 7 in Houston during the annual Texas Association of School Administrators convention. GCISD Superintendent, Dr. Kay Waggoner, will serve as TASA president for the next year. Information:  817-251-5503.

U.S. Secretary of Education to visit HES - VISIT POSTPONED UNTIL NOVEMBER
Lizzette Gonzalez Reynolds, the Region VI representative for U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, will visit HES in November to present a certificate recognizing the school’s Blue Ribbon School Award under the No Child Left Behind initiative. HES is one of 26 Texas public schools to earn this award, and one of only three to receive a visit from Spellings. Information:  817-251-5503.

Timberline Family Night at GHS football game
The Timberline Elementary PTA is sponsoring TES Family Night on Oct. 6 at the Grapevine High football game. All TES families are invited to watch the Mustangs take on Northwest High at 7:30 p.m. at Mustang-Panther Stadium in Grapevine. A special section will be designated for TES families. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for students in advance; $7 general admission at the gate. Information:  Beth Harwell, 817-329-4575 or bbharwell@msn.com

CORRAL set for Friday
Corral, a PTSA-sponsored party after home football games for Grapevine High School students, will host its next gathering on Oct. 6. The event starts immediately after the GHS football game and ends at 12:30 a.m. All GHS students are encouraged to attend and may bring two high school-age guests. The event will be in the Student Activity Center and Gym 1 at GHS. A valid high school ID is required to enter. Admission is $5 per person and includes all food and beverages. CHHS Band March-A-Thon set for Saturday
The Colleyville Heritage High School Band will march for donations on Oct. 7 as part of the annual March-A-Thon fund-raiser. The band will parade through neighborhoods playing various stand-and-show tunes as well as songs requested by individuals and businesses. The band will depart the Band Hall at 9 a.m. and wrap up with a grand finale at 11:30 a.m. at Colleyville Town Center. Proceeds will fund equipment, contest fees, music and more. CHHS Color Guard hosts clinic
The Colleyville Heritage High School Color Guard will host its annual Junior Guard Clinic for GCISD elementary and middle school students from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 7 in CHHS Gym 3. Participants will learn a routine and perform during the halftime show at the CHHS football game on Oct. 13 at Mustang-Panther Stadium. Cost for the clinic is $30 per student and includes a T-shirt, instruction from the CHHS Color Guard director and members, a light snack, certificate of participation and admission to the game. Upcoming Calendar Items

GCISD campuses closed for holiday
GCISD campuses will be closed Oct. 9 for a student/teacher holiday. Administrative offices will be open for regular hours. Classes will resume Oct. 10 as scheduled.

Fall carnivals and festivals
Colleyville Elementary – Loco Luau, the 2006 fall festival and silent auction, will be 12:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 14. Tickets are 5 for $1 in advance at the school; 4 for $1 at the event. Information:  817-305-4940.

High school cheerleaders host joint fund-raiser
Cheerleaders at Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine high schools will join together on Oct. 14 to host a Bingo Night in the CHHS Panther Den. Event will include Bingo games with up to $750 in cash prizes, a live auction featuring two “purse puppies,” a silent auction offering a variety of products and professional services, and a raffle drawing for various electronic items. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the silent auction and Bingo games begin at 6:45 p.m. Admission is $5 and includes the first three Bingo games; children under 5 are free. Reservations due for GHS Faculty Reunion Banquet
The reservation deadline for the Grapevine High School Faculty Reunion Banquet is Oct. 15. Past and present GHS faculty members are invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of GHS at the banquet from 7-11 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Embassy Suites/Outdoor World Hotel in Grapevine. Event will include a sit-down dinner, cash bar and entertainment. Cost is $35 per person payable to GHS Faculty Reunion Banquet. Awards and Announcements

GHS alumni sought
Organizers of Grapevine High School’s 100-year anniversary are seeking yearbooks and/or graduation programs from that school’s history. These are being used to compile of complete listing of GHS graduates on the school’s website, www.gcisd-ghs.org. Yearbooks or programs are needed from 1917-1938, excluding 1924 and 1925, and from 1973 to 1997. All materials will be returned. Information:  Judy Stanley, 817-251-5210 or judy.stanley@gcisd.net.

GHS jazz musicians earn All-Region seats
Five members of the Grapevine High School Band earned a spot in the 2006-2007 Texas Music Educators Association All-Region Jazz Band for Region 24. These students will join other jazz musicians from throughout the region in a jazz clinic and free public concert on Nov. 16 at Newman Smith High School. GHS students are:  Andrew Glavan, trumpet; Nick Schaefer, trumpet; Michael Wharton, guitar; Mandie Bauer, piano; and Aaron Roney, alternate Alto Saxophone.

Driver’s Education registration ongoing
Registration is underway for the fall session of GCISD Driver’s Education. The session runs Monday-Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 10-Nov. 7 in room 106 at Grapevine High. Cost is $315 for GCISD students, $365 for out-of-district students, plus a $15 non-refundable registration fee. Registrations are accepted from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. weekdays in the front offices of both GHS and Colleyville Heritage High as well as the office of Continuing Education, 736 E. Northwest Highway in Grapevine. Information:  817-251-5525.
