Students, staff to honor veterans with variety of activities

Campuses throughout GCISD will honor our nation’s veterans through a variety of assemblies and activities this week. U.S. veterans are invited to attend and be recognized at any or all of these events. Check with individual campuses for a complete list of specific activities. Campus events include:

 

Grapevine High School – Grapevine High presents its eighth-annual Veterans Day program, “A Tribute to Veterans,” on Thursday, Nov. 9, with activities scheduled throughout the morning. The day kicks off at 8:20 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony in front of the school followed at 8:30 a.m. with a “Red Carpet Walk of Honor.” Breakfast for veterans begins at 9 a.m. in the library with entertainment by Mr. Richard Simms, a frequent performer at the USO at DFW Airport, followed by the annual assembly at 10:15 a.m. in the auditorium. This year’s guest speakers will be Frank Turner of Hurst, who served on the USS Franklin CV-13 during World War II as an aviation machinist mate third class, and James Megellas of Colleyville, who served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a rifle platoon leader. Both men have received numerous medals for their service, with Megellas recognized as the 82nd Airborne Division’s most decorated officer. Immediately following the program, Megellas will be available in the library to sign copies of his book, “All the Way to Berlin.” Students, staff and visitors are invited to the GHS Ecology Center for a special garden memorial dedication at the conclusion of the assembly. Bridges Accelerated Learning Center – Bridges teachers and staff will introduce family members who are war veterans and will share stories and photographs with students throughout the week. A visit to DFW Airport is planned to welcome home military personnel from Iraq. Information:  817-251-5474.

 

Grapevine Middle School – The school library will display artifacts throughout the week from military service provided by Grapevine Middle teachers and staff.  Seventh-grade students also are composing letters to a soldier stationed overseas. Information:  817-251-5660.

 

Bear Creek Elementary – Veterans will be honored with a celebration featuring the BCES choir at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10.

 

Glenhope Elementary –Grandparents, special friends and neighbors from South Colleyvine Ranch retirement community are invited to attend the GHES Heritage/Veterans Day program, “Proud to be an American,” on Nov. 17. The Glenhope choir will perform for kindergarten, first and second grade at 8:15 a.m. and grades three, four and five at 9:30 a.m. Information:  817-251-5720.

 

Heritage Elementary – Students, staff and invited guests will gather around the front circle of the school at 8:15 a.m. Nov. 7 for a flag-raising ceremony, special music and words of remembrance. Veterans will then be honored at a reception in the library. Information: 817-305-4820.

 

O.C. Taylor Elementary – First-graders kicked off the school’s Freedom Week festivities with a parade throughout the school on Monday, Nov. 6. A special Veterans Day program from 8:30-10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, will honor local veterans with patriotic songs by the third- and fourth-graders, Colleyville Middle School drum line, U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard and speakers. A reception will follow in the library. Veterans and current military personnel are welcome and encouraged to attend. Information:  817-305-4870.

 

Silver Lake Elementary – Students will gather on Friday, Nov. 10, for a slide show tribute, patriotic songs by the choir and to hear guest speaker Yeoman Rosemary Robertson of the U.S. Air Force. The program concludes with a group singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”  Information:  817-251-5750.
