Tryouts for GHS & CHHS Boys and Girls Swimming Teams
Tryouts for GHS & CHHS Boys & Girls Swim Team for the 2008-2009 school year will be held at the GCISD pool on April 21, 22 and 23 from 3:45-4:30 p.m. Students trying out need to attend only one of the days. Information: Coach Phil Bingenheimer at 817/251-5351 or Coach Erin Brown at 817/251-3156.

Casting call for Elementary and middle school students
Students in grades 1-8 are invited to participate in the Grapevine High School production of "The Legend of Robin Hood...Sort of," May 2, 3 and 4. Sixteen roles for elementary and middle school students are available, including a castle roaming scene, Spice Girls dance scene and a choreographed battle scene. Rehearsals for these scenes will be April 19 & 26 (dress rehearsal), 9 a.m.-12 p.m., with an additional dress rehearsal on May 1, 4-7 p.m. Participants will need to provide their own costumes. GCISD employees to be recognized at annual reception
"Honoring Education's Treasures" is the theme of this year's employee appreciation reception set for May 8, 4 p.m. at the Grapevine Convention Center. Recognition will extend to campus teachers and paraprofessionals of the year, auxiliary employees of the year, retirees and for length of service to the District. The 2008-09 GCISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, Secondary Teacher of the Year and Carolyn Frank Paraprofessional will be named during this event, as will the GCISD Nurse of the Year. Tryouts for GHS and CHHS Boys and Girls Diving Team
Tryouts for Boys & Girls Diving Team for the 2008-2009 school year will be held at the GCISD pool on April 24 and 25 from 3:45-4:30 p.m. Students trying out need to attend only one of the days. Information: Coach Luke Bagnaschi at 817/251-3157.

Mock car crash and teen anti-drinking program puts focus on smart choices
Every 15 Minutes is a two-day program challenging high school students to think about drinking, personal safety and the responsibility of making mature decisions. This year, the program will be held at Grapevine High School on April 24 and 25. Read more about the program.

Council of PTAs to host Trustee candidates forum
The GCISD Council of PTAs will host a forum for the five candidates vying for seats on the GCISD Board of Trustees. The forum will be 6:30-9 p.m. April 29 in the Grapevine High School Library. A general PTA meeting will also be held and will include the election of the 2008-2009 Council officers. Information: Toni Oyler, 817-475-5995.

GHS Project Graduation planning underway
The next meeting of the Grapevine High School Project Graduation Committee will be May 12 at 7 p.m. at Colleyville Elementary School. Information: Kay Bradshaw: 817-656-1923.


Awards and Announcements
GMS students qualifed for Duke program
Six Grapevine Middle School students have qualified for State Recognition in the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Jia Yu Chin, Lauren Maynard, Santi Montes De Oca, Sydney Patrick, Joanna Taylor and Jonathan Vasterling qualified in the Duke college level SAT and ACT tests.

Campuses raise money for juvenile diabetes
Bear Creek Elementary and Colleyville Elementary, along with a school in Aledo ISD, have raised more than $38,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Greater Fort Worth Arlington chapter's Walk to Cure Diabetes. As of March 18, BCE surpassed its fundraising goal of $8,000, collecting $8,159.10. As of the same date, CES had raised $21,964.20 with a goal of $25,000. Each school is given back 10 percent of the money they raise. The Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes is to benefit research into type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes. Both GCISD campuses were recognized in the Fort Worth Business Press, March 24-30, 2008 edition.

"Pennies for Patients" hits new high at Grapevine Middle
Grapevine Middle School students have raised a total of $3913 this year for Pennies for Patients, a fund drive to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. School nurse Mary Callahan distributed jars to each class for collection and 738 students took on the challenge to raise more money than ever before. Teachers helped motivitate students through special activities. With a grand total of $1224, Jared Miller's class, shown in the photo, will receive a catered lunch by the Olive Garden restaurant in Grapevine.

UIL Academic teams compete in Lubbock
The following students were finalists and/or placed in their respective events in the regional UIL Academic competition held the weekend of April 12 in Lubbock:

  • Computer Applications: Ryan Savage, First Place
  • Persuasive Speaking: Eric Wey, Third Place
  • Informative Speaking: Monte Halprin, Finalist: Sixth Place

Ryan Savage and Eric Wey will compete at the UIL State Tournmanet in Austin on May 2-3 and will be eligible for scholarships awarded by the UIL each year.

Pantera dance team brings home trophies
The 70-member Colleyville Heritage Premier Pantera Varsity Dance Team compted in the Champion Dance Nationals in Orlando on March 2, with the extra-large team winning first place tropies in team modern, team lyrical, team jazz and team prop dances, as well as a best in category award. In overall competition, the Panteras earned third place. Officers won first place for their modern dance and second place for lyrical and prop, as well as second place overall for officer dances. Four individuals won solo performance awards, two teams won duet awards and one team won a trio performance award. Senior Panteras won first place for their large ensemble dance. Four students won second place in small ensembles.

Gymnasts swing into next level of competition
Two GHS gymnasts earned honors in the District Meet and will advance to regional competition. Erin Garsau placed first in the all around competition, and first place in vault, bars and floor competitions. Cameron Heaukulani placed 2nd on pommel competition.

Mavericks award GCISD science teacher
Deanna Showalter received the Mavericks Teacher Appreciation award and was recognized along with four other recipients at the April 2 basketball game. Deanna, who teaches biology, is eligible
to win $1,000 for her own use and $1,000 for the school.

GHS basketball player earns spot on all-star team
CJ McElrath of GHS made the North Texas Basketball Coaches Association's All-Star Team. The game will be played Saturday, April 19, 4 p.m. at Lake Highlands High School.

Science Showcase features outstanding projects
The GCISD Science Showcase on April 1 featured 250 projects from elementary and middle school students. High school science students provided feedback for the elementary level projects, while middle school projects were judged by 25 judges. Glenhope Elementary and Cross Timbers Middle schools won honors for the highest parent participation. View winners in each category and grade.


GMS students participate in state math and science tournament
Five GMS students qualified for the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) State Tournament in San Antonio on March 29.

Students who participated in the tournament are: (front row, left to right) Andrew Garza, 6th grade, and Paris Kaman, 6th grade; (back row, left to right) - Shawn Gardner, 6th grade; Rhain Kaman, 8th grade; and Rahul Jain, 6th grade.
