What's Happening This Week

GCISD Board of Trustees meeting
The Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Board of Trustees will meet Monday for its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at the GCISD Administration Building, 3051 Ira E. Woods Ave. in Grapevine. Open session begins at 7 p.m. January is School Board Appreciation Month, and GCISD schools will honor Trustees with posters, cards, etc., during the Recognitions portion of the meeting. GHS Project Graduation planning underway
The next meeting of the Grapevine High School Project Graduation Committee will be 7 p.m. Monday at the new Colleyville Elementary. Information: Kay Bradshaw, 817-656-1923.


JPS school-based health clinic to open
The GCISD/JPS school-based health center is scheduled to open this week to provide general health care services for GCISD students and their siblings up to age 18. The clinic is located in the District's former Instructional Service Center next to Timberline Elementary in Grapevine. The community is invited to a dedication event and reception scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday. Information: 817-251-5750.

Bear Creek collecting socks for soldiers
The fifth-grade Community Kids at Bear Creek Elementary are encouraging BCES families to donate socks to send to U.S. military personnel serving in Iraq. Students will be collecting socks until Jan. 28. Information: 817-305-4853.


Dove family pizza night
Dove Elementary families are invited to enjoy a pizza dinner and support their school during Dove family night beginning 5 p.m. Thursday at CiCi's Pizza in Grapevine. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Dove. Information: 817-251-5700.


Silver Lake to host Career Day
Students at Silver Lake Elementary will learn about the various jobs and careers of parents and community members during the annual SLES Career Fair on Friday. Professionals expected to speak include a pilot, attorney, graphic artist, musician, cartoonist, personal trainer, military personnel and even Dallas Desperados football player Joshua White. Early dismissal for middle and high schools
GCISD middle and high schools will dismiss students early this week following final exams and the close of the fall semester. Middle school students will be released at 11:20 a.m. Thursday and Friday while high school students will be released at 10:30 a.m. Friday only.


Registration underway for Driver's Ed course
Registration is underway for the spring session of GCISD Driver's Education. The session runs Monday-Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 28-Feb. 25 in room 106 at Grapevine High. Cost is $315 for GCISD students, $365 for out-of-district students, pluse a $15 non-refundable registration fee. Information: 817-251-5525. Download a flyer about Driver's Ed.

Upcoming Events

GCISD closed for national holiday
GCISD campuses and administrative offices will be closed Jan. 21 for the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day holiday. Employees will return Jan. 22 and students will return Jan. 23 for the start of the spring semester.

Texas Rangers to visit Cannon Elementary
Two Texas Rangers baseball players and Rangers' mascot "Captain" will visit students at Cannon Elementary on Jan. 25 as part of the Rangers' Winter Caravan program. The Rangers will speak to students in grades pre-kindergarten through five about the importance of education. Information: 817-251-5750.


Silver Lake families invited to movie night
The Silver Lake Elementary PTA is sponsoring a family movie night beginning at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the school. The featured movie will be "Ratatouille." Students, parents and families are invited to wear pajamas and bring blankets, sleeping bags and pillows. Admission is free, and refreshments will be available for purchase. GCISD high school cheerleading meeting scheduled
An informational meeting for parents of any student interested in trying out for cheerleader at Colleyville Heritage High or Grapevine High for the 2008-2009 school year is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. January 30 in the cafeteria at Heritage Middle School. CHHS Panteras to present 'Showcase of Dance'
The Colleyville Heritage High Panteras dance team will present a Spring Fling Showcase of Dance from 2-5 p.m. Feb. 2 in the CHHS Main Gym. The 70-member team will perform dances showcasing styles including modern, lyrical, jazz and prop. The Pantherettes junior varsity team will entertain with jazz, modern and pompom routines. Other performers will include the Panteras and Pantherettes officers, CHHS dance classes, Colleyville Middle and Heritage Middle dance teams, and dancers from local studios. GHS Fillies gear up for annual 5K and Fun Run
Registration is underway for the eighth-annual Fillie Trot 5K, 1-mile and Fun Run, scheduled for Feb. 2 at Oak Grove Park near Lake Grapevine. This annual event benefits the Beth DePertuis Memorial Fund and the Grapevine High Fillies dance team. Early registration fee is $15 per person, $12 each for teams of 10 or more. Awards and Announcements

GHS artists to exhibit in Dallas Museum of Art
Senior Kristen Benton and junior Lauren Fink have been selected to participate in the 2008 Young Masters Juried Exhibition, which showcases artwork from talented Dallas-area high school Advanced Placement art students. A total of 37 pieces were selected for this year's exhibition out of 244 entries. Benton's artwork is a photo montage, left, and Fink's artwork is a palatte knife painting titled "The Woods," right. The Young Masters artwork will be on display at the Dallas Museum of Art later this year. The Young Masters program is sponsored by Advanced Placement Strategies, Inc., and the O'Donnell Foundation.

GMS Spelling Bee winner named
Eighth-grader Jared Lowe, right, won Grapevine Middle's annual Spelling Bee and will represent GMS and GCISD in the area bee in February at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum in Fort Worth. Runner up was eighth-grader Danielle Whyte. Congratulations to Lowe and all the GMS top spellers.

 

 

 

 

 

Students named to All-State band, choir
Eight students at Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine High schools have been selected for All-State band or choir. All-State Choir members are: Sowmya Somanath, CHHS senior, All-State Treble Choir; Kate Bristol, GHS senior, All-State Treble Choir; Daniel Kilkelly, GHS senior, All-State Tenor-Bass Choir; Clara Poole, GHS senior, All-State Treble Choir; Kelly Weaver, GHS senior, All-State Mixed Choir. William Hix, GHS senior, was selected as alternate to the All-State Tenor-Bass Choir. All-State Band members are: Patrick Barsallo, CHHS sophomore, percussion; Kathryn Vinod, CHHS senior, flute. Congratulations to these talented vocalists and musicians.
