Random drug testing for students

Students in grades 9-12 who choose to participate in school-sponsored extracurricular activities will be required to participate in the random drug testing program.

School-sponsored extracurricular activities for which testing is required include:

  • band
  • baseball
  • basketball
  • cheerleading
  • choir
  • cross country
  • drill team
  • football
  • golf
  • gymnastics
  • journalism
  • soccer
  • softball
  • speech/debate/drama
  • swimming/diving
  • tennis
  • track and field
  • UIL academic contest
  • volleyball
  • wrestling

Parents and students who are involved in any of the included activities will receive a copy of the policy, consent forms and will be invited to educational meetings to explain the testing policy and consequences for positive test results. Parents whose students do not participate in extracurricular activities may request their student be added to the random testing pool at their own expense.

The purposes of the drug-testing program are to: prevent injury, illness, and harm resulting from the use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol; help enforce a drug-free educational environment; deter student use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol; and educate students regarding the harm caused by the use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol.



NEW IN 2006-07
In a continuing effort to provide resources for parents, the GCISD is making available to families access to an online drug education program called the Parent Substance Abuse Awareness Seminar.
