As the counselor, I, Mandy
Coburn, am dedicated to help meet the educational and emotional
needs of every student, parent, teacher, and administrator here at Cannon.
These needs are met in a variety of ways.
Classroom guidance:
Twice a month I visit each classroom to share lessons on topics that will
help students throughout the year. The lessons correspond with the Character
Education theme for the month.
August - Creating Success in Schools
September - Respecting Ourselves and Others
October - Making a Difference
November - Keeping a Positive Attitude
December - The Gift of Friendship
January - Stumbling Blocks or Stepping Stones
February - Celebrating America's Diversity
March - Making Responsible Choices
April - Building Courage and Character
May - Building a Caring Community
Group and Individual Counseling:
Students can be referred for counseling by parents, teachers, or administrators.
The groups are designed in a way to benefit each child's needs. During
the counseling time students are given the opportunity to complete activities,
lessons, play games, and play with toys in order to help them express
their feelings and cope with any situation they may be facing. "Counseling with toys helps children
express themselves through their natural language of play." -Gary
Landreth
Groups focus on the following topics: helping
students understand themselves, handling feelings, developing appropriate
social skills, developing self-control, making appropriate decisions,
being responsible, and coping with difficult situations.
Student Planning
It is important for students to learn how to set educational as well as
behavioral goals and work to achieve them. Students in Pre K begin with
small goals. As students grow older they begin to set bigger goals. Along
with the Cannon staff, I work to help students accomplish the goals they
set for themselves.
Parent and Teacher Support
Communication is essential to help students become successful; therefore
I am available to consult with teachers, parents, and administrators in
order to help in any way.
