Organization Tips
Questions & Answers
Q: My son  has a hard time finishing assignments on time. He's smart and motivated to learn. But his inability to "get his act together" keeps him from getting good grades. How can I help?
A: Many middle schoolers have this problem. They are poorly organized. And this hinders their study efforts.
Middle schoolers must learn that organization is essential for success in school. . and life.
Make sure your son knows how to organize his assignments, notebooks, books and time. You might suggest he:
  • Organize a place to study. Have a clear desktop with nothing on it except what he needs for the task he's working on. Keep supplies nearby for easy access.
  • Eliminate all distractions. This includes TV, loud music and the phone.
  • Schedule a specific time for study. Make a daily time sheet for activities and block out a time for school work.
  • Create a "system" for handling school papers. Keep a three-ring binder with a section for each class. Or keep a folder for each class. Use dividers to make sections for work, study guides and returned tests. File papers when they are received.
  • Create a notebook of assignment planning sheets based on his school schedule. Down the left side, list all subjects. List assignments next to their subjects every day.
  • Check the assignment sheet at his locker each day before leaving school. Collect all books materials needed.
  • Break down assignments into manageable "bites." Schedule and tackle one piece at a time.
