Parent Tips

Coping With Middle Schoolers
Expect to See Unusual Behavior in Middle School
It's the rare parent of a middle schooler who has never been taken completely by surprise. Your child will say or do something that is so unlike his younger self that it startles you.

Well, your child is in the same boat. He is surprised, too. He is suddenly realizing things that have never occurred to him before.

Here are some new qualities you may see in your middle schooler. Nearly every middle schooler shows one or more of these at some point:

  • Skepticism. Suddenly your middle schooler isn't so sure about things that have always been a part of his life. These can include schoolwork, religion or your family values.
  • Smugness. Your middle schooler has learned a little. He'll probably act as though has learned everything.
  • Crusading. Middle schoolers become very interested in social causes. They also feel some heartbreak as they find they can't fix everything.
  • Critical, but sensitive. Your middle schooler will have no problem telling you everything that is wrong with you. But if you make one wrong comment to him? He'll explode, storm away or stew for hours
