Principal's Perspective
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

During this particular season we may hear these words on the radio or piped through the sound system within a store, mall, or restaurant.  I think that part of the reason we consider this such a wonderful time is that practically everyone around the world seems to pause for a time of celebration.  Many of the major religions have celebrations during this season of the year as well as those aspects of this holiday season not directly connected with any particular religious celebration.

I cannot think of this season without also thinking of a recent trip our family took to a destination that has long been known as “the happiest place on earth.”  As we enjoyed our day together, taking video and still pictures to treasure, there were moments at which this destination seemed to fall short of its reputation as “the happiest place on earth.”  While we were there we watched rude, selfish, and disrespectful behavior as well as parents chiding their crying children with statements such as, “You are going to have a good time,” OR “You are going to have fun whether you like it or not!”

As I reflected upon this experience on our drive back to our hotel, I couldn’t help but think of the winter holiday season.  I thought about the rushing that occurs in search of that one “perfect gift.”  I also thought of the inconsiderate behavior of crowds, the pushing and shoving and jockeying for the best possible parking space.  As I thought about both of these experiences, it occurred to me that both seemed to focus more upon the “do” than the “be.”  Is it possible that we have become so focused upon going to the right destinations, following the ideal itinerary, purchasing the perfect gift, and doing so much within the 24 hours we are given each day, that we fail to realize the joy that is found in simply being fully present in the moment?

With two little ones at home, I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to dote on them and to make vacations and holidays special times.  However, I must admit my struggle to ensure that these events do not overshadow the fact that the children are my focus.  I heard a gentleman speak this summer who shared a story of going on vacation with his two young (almost teenage) boys and his mother.  Through a series of humorous events his mother helped this young dad to learn the important lesson of enjoying the journey.

When I came to Grapevine Elementary in 2002 our theme for the year was “The Journey Continues.”  As I find myself in the midst of year number five preparing for what promises to be a wonderful holiday season, I wonder if we would do well to pause for a moment in order to enjoy this incredible journey.  Yes, we all must have goals and a driving sense of purpose that keeps us focused upon where we are headed.  However, if we become so focused upon the journey and reaching our destination of another successful year, might it be possible that we miss out on some of the fun to be enjoyed along the way?

What I have learned through my experiences is that the fun seems to be a direct result of the focus upon others and the investment of self into each and every moment we have together.  It is for this reason that I want to help my children to become collectors of memories.  I would love to help them to collect and to treasure their time with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  I want them to remember special times when our family is all together, because these moments cannot be wrapped in special paper, they do not come with a price tag (because they are priceless), they will not rust, they will not break, and they can’t be stolen.  Regardless of where we happen to find ourselves or how we may choose to celebrate during this holiday season, I encourage all of us to pause long enough to remember the importance of “being” in the moment with those we love rather than becoming consumed with all there is to “do.”  If we all were to invest ourselves into these moments, it could result in making this truly the most wonderful time of the year!  Happy Holidays!
