Awards and Honors
2006 NCLB Blue Ribbon Award

In 2005, HES was nominated by the Texas Education Agency for the 2006 No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon Schools Award. This award is given by the United States Department of Education. HES was one of only 26 schools chosen by the state of Texas for this award based on our high achievement!

On September 22, 2006, the U. S. Department of Education announced the recipients of the NCLB Blue Ribbon Schools award (see link above for list). HES is proud to be named as one of the award recipients. Congratulations to the students, parents, faculty, and staff for making our school successful!

TBEC

HES is one of only forty-two Texas elementary schools to be named to the TBEC/JFTK Honor Roll of the best performing public schools in Texas for 2002. HES is the only school from GCISD to receive this distinction. Just for the Kids (JFTK) and the Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) released the Honor Roll list on Tuesday, October 8, 2002.

TEA

In 2001, the Texas legislature enacted the Gold Performance Acknowledgment (GPA) system to acknowledge districts and campuses for high performance on indicators other than those used to assign accountability ratings. HES received this distinction in the areas of attendance and mathematics.

Blue Ribbon Since 1982, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program has celebrated many of America's most successful schools. A Blue Ribbon flag waving overhead has become a trademark of excellence, a symbol of quality recognized by everyone from parents to policy-makers. In May 1999, HES received the National Blue Ribbon of Excellence from the US Department of Education . The National Blue Ribbon Program identifies and recognizes schools that are models of excellence and equity - schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to educational excellence for all students.

Campus Excellence Committee
In June 1990 the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 1 mandating the establishment of district and campus committees to be involved in decision making. This legislation provided for the election of classroom teachers and campus-based staff representatives. In addition, it established guidelines for including participation by parents and community members of campus committees. The campus committees were charged with the task of setting goals designed to increase student achievement. A year later additional legislation was passed which expanded the roll of these committees to include responsibility for increased student achievement through goal setting, curriculum, budgeting, staffing patterns, and school organization.

The Campus Excellence Committee is made up of 9-15 members with representation from administration, faculty, staff, parents and community members.

The vital role of the Campus Excellence Committee is to ensure the implementation of site-based decision making. The CEC makes important decisions for the campus regarding budget, goal setting, curriculum, staffing patterns, and school organization.
