Happy Spring! I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Spring Break. It's hard to believe the fourth nine weeks of school has already begun.
During the month of April, Heritage Elementary School teachers will continue to administer the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) to third, fourth, and fifth grade students. This is a series of criterion-referenced examinations in Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Please refer to the schedule below:
April 8 TAKS Math for Fifth Grade Students
April 29 TAKS Math for Third and Fourth Grade Students
April 30 TAKS Reading for Fourth Grade Students
May 1 TAKS Science for Fifth Grade Students
Throughout the 2007-2008 school year, students and teachers have worked as partners to ensure the success of all students on TAKS. Tutoring during the school day, after school tutorials, and accelerated reading and math support are a few of the interventions provided to students during the year. Following the receipt of the TAKS results in May, the classroom teachers, Ms. Straub, and I will review the results to develop a plan to ensure academic success for all students during the 2008-2009 school year. Students in third, fourth, and fifth grade who fail any portion of TAKS are highly encouraged to attend GCISD's summer school academic assistance program in June.
Kindergarten Registration will be held on May 12 from 3:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. We look forward to registering our new kindergarten students during that time. Please share this information with your friends and neighbors as we must have an accurate count of kindergarten students in order to hire teachers.
Field Day will be held on May 16 with Field Day Rain Date on May 19. Tina Bostick and Connie Lamb have been working very hard to prepare a day filled with fun and sportsmanship. They have planned several new and exciting activities for the students to enjoy throughout the day.
The PTA General Meeting and Fifth Grade Program are scheduled for May 29 at 6:30 p.m. The PTA will award the Linda Holifield Scholarship to a graduating senior who attended Heritage Elementary School as well as award scholarships to teachers for continued education. We look forward to watching our fifth grade students perform as a group before leaving for middle school.
There are many other events happening throughout the month of May and June. Please refer to your classroom teacher's newsletter, our campus website, the PTA Clipboard, and the GCISD School Channel for upcoming events.
It is a privilege for me to work with the students, parents, and staff at Heritage Elementary School. Thank you for sharing your children with me every day. I appreciate your support as we work together to continue to make children our number one priority!
Educationally yours,
Stacey Voigt
