I will be a sophomore next year, how do these changes affect me?

  • Why are we cramming so much change in this year?
    While there are many changes being implemented this year, several have been in the works for years and others are outside of our control. The Texas State Legislature passed House Bill 5 and we have no control over its contents. Since moving to a seven-period day in 2011, our community has expressed the desire to move back to a block schedule. Due to fiscal responsibility, that was something we are able to restore in the coming school year. The work of the high school strategic committee began in Fall 2012 as we worked to align the campuses with the goals of LEAD 2021. So while it may seem like there are a lot of changes, they are all for the ultimate benefit of our students. 

    I understand there will be a new scale for calculating my weighted GPA. What does the new scale look like?
    To provide more incentive for students to consider taking higher level courses, the committee is proposing an equal weighted differential between AP, Pre-AP and On Level courses.  This aligns with goals of our LEAD 2021 strategic plan to encourage and enhance college and career readiness opportunities for our students. The proposed GPA scale is outlined below:

    When does the new GPA scale go into effect?
    The proposed GPA scale would go into effect beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. GPA already earned will remain unaffected by changes made by the action plans. Grades already earned will be weighted using the GPA scale currently in place. 

    How will these changes affect my class rank? Will I receive a class rank on my final report card for the 2014-2015 school year?
    The district will now calculate and report class rank for the top 10 percent, as required by state law. The top 10 percent class rank will be determined by using grades earned in only English, Social Studies, Math, Languages Other Than English and AP courses not associated with these subjects. We are recommending that these reporting changes go into effect in the spring semester of the 2013-2014 school year. On the final report card you will receive at the end of this year, it will only contain class rank if you are in the top 10 percent.
     
    What if I am currently taking a Pre-AP class for the 2013-2014 school year? Will I still get credit toward class rank?
    Yes. For the Class of 2017, any Pre-AP course not associated with these subjects and taken to satisfy state or district requirements for graduation will be included in the calculation for class rank.

    How will the removal of class rank (outside the top 10 percent) affect automatic admissions for colleges? Can universities make a request for class rank for automatic admission?
    Automatic admissions are typically restricted to the top 10 percent. We will not calculate or report class rank outside of the top 10 percent, even if a request is made from a university. This encourages colleges to consider all aspects of our students’ experience such as course selection, extra-curricular activities, community service, leadership, etc. 

    Are dual credit courses calculated when determining the top 10 percent?
    Currently, dual credit courses are calculated as an unweighted grade for the purpose of class rank. After considering feedback from our students, parents and the community, the Administration is bringing forward a recommendation to weight Dual Credit courses as PreAP. The Board of Trustees will consider this recommendation at the April 28 meeting. 

    I have already chosen all of my classes through Arena Scheduling. If I want to make any changes based on this new information, when can I adjust my schedule?
    There will be a window during May and again in August when students will be able to make adjustments to their schedule in arena scheduling. If you have specific questions or need additional help, please contact your counselor directly. 

    With all of these proposed changes, are we setting up our students to be as competitive as other districts in the area and state?
    We believe that by restricting how we report class rank, we are aligning ourselves with many other highly competitive districts in the area and state. The proposed GPA chart creates further motivation for our students to challenge themselves by taking Pre-AP and AP courses. At the same time, changing the way we calculate class rank for the top 10 percent allows our students to continue their involvement with activities without concern of negatively affecting their GPA.
