GHS band seniors receive thousands in scholarships.
The Grapevine High School Mustang Band recently awarded $7,500 in college scholarships to 13 band seniors at the Grapevine High School Band Banquet. In addition to scholarships, select band members were recognized for musical and leadership excellence during the 2013-2014 school year.
According to, Brandt Leondar, assistant director of bands, this special group of seniors and band members survived and overcame several challenges and obstacles throughout the past couple of years that made their band participation both a challenge and a learning opportunity.
“Not only have they endured a great deal of upheaval due to band director and staff changes in recent years, they persevered through the untimely passing of one their own band members this year,” Leondar said. “This was a challenge unlike any they had faced during their young lives.”
This tragedy sparked the idea of a memorial scholarship fund, which was one of the many scholarships awarded at the banquet. The remainder of the funds came from the GCISD Band Booster Club and Grapevine High School Mustang Band Booster Club.
The banquet was held at the Embassy Suites DFW Outdoor World on May 30, 2014. The students, staff, family and friends of the band program joined together to eat dinner and celebrate the accomplishments of the past year. Highlights of the evening included dinner, community and parent recognitions, scholarship honors, awards and recognition program, a video memory showcase and introduction of the new officers and leadership.
