GCISD's Administration building and other district offices and programs will be closed the week of July 2-6. Summer Enrichment classes and the ECDC also will be closed. The KidzU Summer Camp extended care program will remain open.

Silver Lake Elementary principal named at June Board meeting
Veteran administrator and educator Gilberto Gonzalez, Ph.D., was named principal of Silver Lake Elementary by the GCISD Board of Trustees at its June 18 meeting. The position was previously held by Lisa Dunn who will be principal at Cross Timbers Middle School.The SLE PTA and Staff will host a community welcome for him at the school on June 28 from 3-5 p.m. Read more about Dr. Gonzalez.

GCISD welcomes new Executive Director of Special Services

Laura Hill has been named the new Executive Director of Special Services. Hill, who currently serves as an education consultant for the Region XI Education Service Center, brings more than 20 years of diverse experience in the field of education to her new role. The GCISD Board of Trustees approved the hiring recommendation in June. Hill will be taking over for Dr. Peggy Wheaton, who has served students and families in GCISD’s Special Services program for 18 years. Wheaton resigned her post in GCISD and has accepted a job in Denton ISD. Read more about Hill.

Young Entrepreneurs Academy to be launched in GCISD
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy, or YEA!, is an innovative program that guides students through the process of starting their own real business. The Grapevine Chamber is excited to announce the start of the YEA! program at Grapevine Colleyville ISD.YEA! is a groundbreaking program that takes students between the ages of 11 and 18 through the process of starting a launching a real business or social movement over the course of an academic year. By the end of the class, students own and operate fully-formed and functioning businesses, which may be carried after their graduation from the program. YEA! aims at teaching students at an early age how to make a job, not just take a job. YEA! was developed at the University of Rochester with support from The Kauffman Foundation. CTMS Got Ca$H team named FPS grand champions
Cross Timbers Middle School's Future Problem Solving Team Got CA$H was named grand champion at the Future Problem Solving Program International competition in Bloomington, Indiana this month. Read more.

Teacher named Texas finalist for Presidential award

Wendy Hendry, Bransford Elementary School, is one of three teachers in the state to be named as a Texas finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching program. Hendry teaches kindergarten at BES and has been a teacher for 16 years, all of those at GCISD. The PAEMST is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Read more.

Summer meals offered to students

GCISD Nutrition Services department continues to provide free breakfast and lunch during the summer to students ages 18 and younger. The program will provide meals with the essential nutrients for active, growing kids. No registration, PIN number, proof of age or income are needed to participate in the free meals program. All kids have to do is show up at a serving site. The entire meal must be consumed at the serving site; no "to go" meals available. Find out where to go and what time the meals are provided.

Cross Timbers Track and surrounding fields are closed for the summer for construction.
Skyward Family Access will be unavailable until August 1 when online registration begins.
If you plan to volunteer at a school next year, please complete the Volunteer Background Check Form. You must complete a form each school year.
Students must be up-to-date on their immunizations before returning to school. Requirements are listed on the Health Services section of the GCISD website.

The GCISD Administration building is open year-round but will begin observing summer hours on Monday, June 4. During the summer months, the district hours are Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5:15, with offices closed on Fridays. The district will resume regular operating hours on Monday, August 13.

Summer reading lists, back to school dates on the web
Looking for something to read on summer vacation? Check out the recommended summer reading lists for great choices by grade and age-appropriate suggestions by the experts. The GCISD Language Arts department, grades K-12, requires students to read at least two books during the summer months. AP classes may require specific books which can be found on the campus websites. Back to school dates, forms you may need and other information is available on the Back to School section under the Schools tab and will be updated throughout the summer months. We will also post information on our Facebook page and Twitter so you can find out what you need to know throughout the summer and be ready to go on the first day of school, Monday, August 27. Foundation fundraiser set for Texas Motor Speedway

On June 9, see the "fastest race in Texas" and get a donation made to the Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation. Texas Motor Speedway is hosting "Don't Blink," and by attending the race you can help the Foundation raise money that directly benefits the students of GCISD. Grapevine Middle to welcome new principal
Bringing 20 years experience as a teacher and campus administrator at the middle school level, Linda Young has been selected to serve as the new principal of Grapevine Middle School in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD. She currently serves as principal of Zundelowitz (Zundy) Junior High School in Wichita Falls ISD. The GCISD Board of Trustees formally approved the recommendation to hire Young during the regularly scheduled monthly meeting on May 21. Young is expected to transition into her new role in GCISD during July. The GMS PTA is sponsoring a Meet and Greet from 4-5:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, in the library for anyone who would like to meet the new principal. Read more.

GHS & CHHS included in Newsweek's "Best High Schools of 2012" list
GHS and CHHS have been ranked in the top 1,000 public high schools in the U.S. by Newsweek magazine. Colleyville Heritage High comes in at number 198 in the country, while Grapevine High ranks as number 396. Read more

GHS student's artwork to be displayed at Administration building
Meg Van Over, a senior at Grapevine High School, was recognized at the May 21 Board of Trustees meeting for her artwork "breadth." The piece was selected as the winner of the 2012 GCISD Art Show. Each year, the district purchases one student piece for $200, rotating grade levels each year. The picture will be framed and added to the permanent display in the Administration building. Photos

PARENT SURVEY CLOSES FRIDAY AT 5 p.m.
The GCISD parent satisfaction survey has been reopened through 5 p .m. on Friday, May 25 to provide parents with more time to respond. Completing the survey takes about 25 minutes and answers will be confidential. Results will be used to continuously improve our school and our district. Begin the survey here.

GCISD holds rally for Rachel's Challenge
Hundreds of GCISD parents, students and teachers gathered at Mustang-Panther Stadium Tuesday night in support of Rachel's Challenge, a national program that has been incorporated district wide since 2008 to promote kindness, volunteering and tolerance. Highlights included the Link Presentation, which represented over 46,000 random acts of kindness. Read more and see photos on FaceBook.

Board of Trustees elects new officers for upcoming school year
The Board of Trustees elected their new officers for the 2012-2013 school year before the general school board meeting on May 21. Jorge Rodriguez was selected as President, Becky St. John was elected Vice President, and Leon Leal was elected Secretary. In addition to the naming of officers, two Board members were sworn in last night. Kimberley Davis, who was elected to Place 1 this year, took her oath of office first, followed by Becky St. John. Mrs. St. John was re-elected to Place 2 in this year's election. Read more and see photos.

Elementary registration changed for parent convenience

Parents of Elementary students: remember to turn in two proofs of residency to your school by Friday, May 18. Then you will be able to complete your child's registration online during the summer...no standing in line in August! Elementary principals sent home letters in April explaining the new process and information is on the school websites. By verifying residency now, you will be able to complete registration online beginning August 1. If you did not receive a letter from your elementary school, please contact the office today.

School meal prices to increase in fall
Student lunch prices will increase by ten cents beginning with the 2012-2013 school year to meet USDA regulations. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires school districts to annually assess meal prices with the end goal of all paid lunch prices at least equaling the free reimbursement rate minus the paid reimbursement rate. The US Department of Agriculture currently reimburses Grapevine-Colleyville ISD $2.79 for free lunches. The new prices for the 2011-2012 will be $2.15 for elementary students and $2.40 for secondary students. Breakfast prices will be unchanged at $1 for full price and .30 for reduced price.

There's something for everyone with GCISD's Summer Programs so take a look at what's available and register your child today for some fun and learning this summer.

Online registration for summer programs continues for elementary and secondary students, who have a wide variety of choices when it comes to summer fun and learning at GCISD. For kindergarten through grade 8, enrichment classes are engaging and exciting, giving students a taste of art, music, drama, science, math, technology, reading, travel or sports. Elementary Enrichment classes meet for three hours a day, five days a week, for one week. Classes are held at Cross Timbers Middle School, with the first session beginning the week of June 4 and the last session the week of August 20.

With Secondary Summer School and Secondary Enrichment, students have options for credit recovery, acceleration and enrichment, including field trips. Secondary summer programs will be at Heritage Middle School. Morning and afternoon classes are available, and several online classes are available. Session A is June 4 through June 15; Session B is June 18 through June 29.

The summer programs at GCISD also include KidzU Summer Camp, KidzU Extended Care, Bowmen Sports Camps, Summer Enrichment for ages 3-5, ESL/Bilingual and bridge classes in math and/or science for 6th and 7th graders for enrichment or acceleration.

The Summer Bridge Math and Science Acceleration or Enrichment Program courses are designed to strengthen math and science knowledge and thinking skills. The program is designed to support current students in On-Level, PAP or Accelerated Math or Science for success in 7th or 8th grade Math and Science. Each course, taught by GCISD math and science teachers, is three weeks in length for four hours a day, and runs concurrently with GCISD summer school courses.

Saturday, May 12, is Election Day so please take a few minutes to get out and vote. On the ballot are candidates for two places on the GCISD Board of Trustees. Board members are elected to three-year terms, are unpaid and do not represent specific geographic areas. Place 1: Kimberley Barber Davis, Julia Guzman-Henderson. Rick Hinckley will be on the ballot but is no longerseeking election; Place 2: Becky St. John- (Incumbent), Gary Harrison-Ducros. High schools named to list of "best schools" by U.S. News
Colleyville Heritage High School was ranked 37th and Grapevine High School was 47th in Texas in this year's U.S. News Best High Schools list, published this week. Nationally, CHHS was ranked #417, while Grapevine High School ranked #529. The 2012 rankings including data on nearly 22,000 public high schools from 49 states and the District of Columbia. CHHS received a Gold Medal, one of only 46 in Texas awarded. GHS received a Silver Medal, one of 123 in Texas to receive that additional honor. U.S. News included 402 Texas schools in the rankings. Congratulations to our GCISD Employees of the Year

Three GCISD employees were named teachers of the year and paraprofessional of the year during festive campus visits by the "Surprise Patrol." Secondary Teacher of the Year is Nichole Cruson, Heritage Middle School, Elementary Teacher of the Year is Linda Fullhart, Silver Lake Elementary, and Paraprofessional of the Year is Bev Bergeland, Bridges.

The employees were visited at their campuses with the fanfare of drums and the excitement of students and co-workers cheering them on as Superintendent Robin Ryan made announcements to each one and gave them gifts from the district. Janice Kane, Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation Executive Director, presented each with an invitation to the Foundation's Star Awards Banquet where each will receive a check from the Foundation. Other members of the "Surprise Patrol" included Chief Learning Officer Rick Westfall, and Patti Davis, Executive Director of Administration. Several members of the Colleyville Heritage High School Drumline set the exciting pace for the presentations.

Silver Lake Elementary principal to join CTMS
Lisa Dunn, principal of Silver Lake Elementary School, has accepted an opportunity to serve as principal of Cross Timbers Middle School in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD. Long-time educator Linda Tidmore, current CTMS principal, is retiring at the end of this school year. Dunn has been principal of SLE for nine years and has a total of 11 years campus administrative experience in education and 22 years in GCISD. Dunn will finish out the school year at SLES before officially taking over the leadership role at CTMS. Read more

Parent meetings set in May for dual language programs
Parent informational meetings for the Two-Way Dual Language Program will be held in May at the three GCISD campuses that have the program. Schools with the program are Silver Lake Elementary, Cannon Elementary, and Timberline Elementary. Applications for the Dual Language Program for 2012-2013 will be available at the meetings and accepted beginning Monday, May 21. Registration for incoming kindergarten students who would like to participate in the Two-Way Dual Language Program during the 2012-2013 school year will be held in May. Enrollment in the Two-Way Dual Language Program is open to ALL incoming kindergarten students in the District, as space is available. Currently space is available at Cannon and Timberline elementary schools. Read more

Rachel's Challenge Rally set for May 22
The public is invited to attend The Rachel's Challenge Rally in Mustang-Panther Stadium, May 22, 6 p.m. The rally will be a fun and exciting event to celebrate and congratulate all students, grades K-12 grades, who have made the commitment to kindness and compassion and have followed it so diligently throughout this school year. Rachel's Challenge is a program that has been implemented throughout GCISD to promote kindness and compassion so that our schools remain safe places to learn. More than 4,000 participants are expected for the event. Read more

Dr. Ryan leads state legislators on campus visits; Rep. Truitt talks school finance with community
At the invitation of Superintendent Robin Ryan, state legislators Rep. Vicki Truitt and Sen. Wendy Davis toured several campuses, talked with students about their various projects and got a first-hand look at the new digital classrooms that have been implemented this year across the district. In addition to her campus tour, Representative Truitt partnered with GCISD to host a Town Hall meeting regarding Texas school finance on May 1 at Cross Timbers Middle School. About 80 parents and school administrators were in attendance as Rep. Truitt discussed the looming difficulties facing the state's public education funding and addressed questions and comments from many members of the audience. Truitt said she will take all the feedback from constituents back to Austin to share with legislators as a newly appointed member to the Select Committee on Public School Finance, which will study the issue in depth and make recommendations to the 83rd Legislature in 2013.

Graduation for Class of 2012

Graduation for seniors at Grapevine High and Colleyville Heritage High will be held on May 31, at College Park Center - UT Arlington. The center is located at 601 S. Pecan Street, Arlington, TX 76019 map and directions. Commencement for GHS is at 3:30 p.m., and at 7:30 p.m. for CHHS.

GCISD and Rep. Truitt partner on school finance town hall meeting

State Rep. Vicki Truitt (R-Keller) and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD are partnering in a town hall meeting to engage local residents, educators, parents and students in a discussion about challenges with the public school finance system. Truitt is organizing the meeting to better understand the concerns of those that she represents in the Legislature. Frequently Asked Questions for proposed attendance zone adjustment for SLES, Dove, Cannon

Questions and answers related to the proposed attendance zone adjustment have been posted on the district website. The questions were taken from the recent parent survey offered to those at Cannon Elementary, Dove Elementary and Silver Lake Elementary regarding a plan being considered to adjust attendance zones for those three schools. The plan would alleviate crowding at SLES caused by steady growth in student enrollment. A proposal is scheduled to be recommended to the GCISD Board of Trustees during a meeting on May 7. The recommendation originally was planned for the April 23 meeting, but district leaders delayed to allow the district more time to study parent survey responses and to give parents additional time to review the details of the proposal. Pickup packets for next year's kindergarten, prekindergarten registration

Enrollment packets for students who will be entering prekindergarten or kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year will be available for pickup at each elementary campus, during April 30-May 4, 7:30-3:30 p.m. Completed packets may be returned anytime during the week of April 30-May 4 during regular school hours. Packets may also be pick up and/or returned on Tuesday, May 1, during evening registration/orientation at each campus. During this time, parents and students also may visit the school and meet some of the administrative staff and teachers. This year’s enrollment process for prekindergarten and kindergarten is different from that of previous years, allowing parents more flexibility to pick up the registration packet, complete the enrollment information and return the packet to the campus. Rachel's Challenge Rally - May 22, 6 p.m.

Rachel's Challenge Rally will be held at the Mustang-Panther Stadium on May 22 at 6 p.m.. Sponsored by GCISD and the GC Education Foundation, Rachel's Challenge will be a fun and exciting evening to celebrate and congratulate students throughout the District who have made the commitment to kindness and compassion and who have followed it so diligently. More than 4,000 participants overall are predicted to attend this year, including 900 elementary students, 800 middle school choir members, high school drum lines, and clubs from middle and high schools. The GHS Drill Team will have a donation table at the rally for its annual Kick-a-thon Fundraiser to benefit the Beth DuPertuis Scholarship Fund. TAKS and STAAR testing next week

Students in this year's 10th and 11th grades will take the TAKS test next week. The tests must be passed for graduation and will be used by colleges to determine readiness for higher education. Sophomores will be testing on April 24 (Math), April 26 (Science) and April 27 (Social Studies), while Juniors will be testing on April 25 (Math), April 26 (Science) and April 27(Social Studies). Students taking exit level retests for graduation will take them on April 24, 25, 26 and 27th. Students in third and fourth grades will take the STAAR Math Test on Tuesday, April 24 and the STAAR Reading Test on Wednesday, April 25. Fifth graders will take the STAAR Science Test on Thursday, April 26. STAAR is the new state-mandated assessment. More information about STAAR is available here.

Parent meetings set for Two-Way Dual Language Program

Parent informational meetings for the Two-Way Dual Language Program will be held in May at the three GCISD campuses that have the program. Schools with the program are Silver Lake Elementary, Cannon Elementary, and Timberline Elementary. Applications for the Dual Language Program for 2012-2013 will be available at the meetings and accepted beginning Monday, May 21. Registration for incoming kindergarten students who would like to participate in the Two-Way Dual Language Program during the 2012-2013 school year will be held in May. Enrollment in the Two-Way Dual Language Program is open to ALL incoming kindergarten students in the District, as space as available. Currently space is available at Cannon and Timberline elementary schools.

The Two-Way Dual Language program provides opportunities for students to acquire a second language while maintaining their home language and achieving academic performance at or above grade level. Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students are together in a classroom, and daily instruction is delivered in both Spanish and English.

Parent Survey opens next week
It is that time of year when we ask for your feedback about the experience you and your child have had with the academics and operations at your school and in the district. Your input is used in measuring our progress and ensuring the decisions we make, and the priorities we set, continue to align with the expectations of the families we serve. Spring 2011 was the first year GCISD coordinated a district-wide survey effort to gauge parent satisfaction with its campuses, staff and operations. In previous years, each school conducted individual surveys of parents. The purpose of having a district-wide effort is to streamline the survey process, provide more meaningful data collection and two-way communication, and align with the district’s LEAD 2021 strategic plan. This year’s survey will begin next week and will remain open for two weeks. The survey will take approximately 20-25 minutes to complete and all answers will be confidential. We then will share the results with you and outline what changes you can anticipate as a result of your feedback. Please watch for specific survey dates coming next week.

Nutrition serves spring newsletter to parents

GCISD Nutrition Services' parent newsletter, "Around the Plate," is out and you won't want to miss it! In the Spring issue of the newsletter, learn about nationwide program that provides free, nutritious breakfasts for students, see the dates and locations for the Summer Feeding Program, meet the District's new registered dietitian and get some guidelines for storing summer produce. The Nutrition Services website is also a great source of information about food related topics such as ideas for healthy snacks, gardening with children, nutritional data on items served in the school cafeterias, the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs, and food allergens. Join us this afternoon for GCISD's 50th Anniversary Celebration
In 1965, Grapevine and Colleyville schools consolidated and today we are still Building Excellent Schools Together! Join us from 4:30-6:30 p.m. today as we celebrate this 50 year milestone in the rich history of Grapevine-Colleyville ISD. The program includes performances by the CHHS and CHHS bands, announcement of the 50th Anniversary Literary Contest Winners, a special presentation from U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant, proclamations from both cities, and recognition of former superintendents, board members and others who are present. This will be followed by a reception in the Administration building, and student performances and displays throughout the building. Watch for a special edition of GCISD FastNews tomorrow with photos from the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Meet the candidates for Board of Trustees at public forum

The public is invited to learn more about those who are on the election ballot for GCISD Board of Trustees at a candidates forum on Wednesday, April 18, 7 p.m. at Grapevine High School. Hosted by the GCISD Council of PTAs and moderated by the Tarrant County League of Women Voters, the forum will begin immediately after the GCISD Council of PTAs general meeting and officer election. All candidates have been invited to participate in the debate-style question and answer session, in which they will respond to questions asked by the audience.

Leadership changes for several campuses announced

Several campus leaders have accepted new roles within the district beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. Becky Prentice has accepted an opportunity to serve as the Coordinator of Assessment for GCISD. Prentice, who has served the past six years as principal of Colleyville Heritage High School, brings 27 years of experience in classroom and campus administration to her new role in the district. Emberly Spillman, Coordinator of Alternative Schools (Vista and Bridges), has accepted the position of Director of Counseling. Tim Hughes, who has been principal of Grapevine Middle School for 12 years, will be moving to the Coordinator of Alternative Schools role.

TxDOT to begin SH 26 pavement overlay on Monday, April 16
TxDOT will begin construction to resurface SH 26 through Colleyville, Hurst, and North Richland Hills on Monday, April 16. The project will consist of pavement milling, pavement repair and an asphalt overlay. During construction, SH 26 will be reduced to one lane each way. Work areas will be limited to approximately two miles and the majority of the work will be completed during daytime off-peak hours (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) to minimize the inconvenience to the traveling public. The project will encompass SH 26 from John McCain Road to Farm-to-Market Road 1938. The first phase will be from John McCain Road to Glade Road. The seven-mile project is estimated for completion by this fall/winter, dependent on weather. View daily lane closures on the TxDOT website here.

Required immunizations for middle school students available at schools in April
GCISD and the Tarrant County Health Department will be hosting an immunization clinic at middle schools in April. All 7th graders will be required to have proof of the the required vaccines prior to the first day of school. Read more.

Submit your bid and win the opportunity to throw the first pitch

The GCISD Education Foundation is offering you the opportunity to submit a bid for the First Pitch at the Texas Rangers versus Seattle Mariners game at GCISD's Night with the Ranger, Tuesday, April 10. The winner also will receive four premium seats and a parking pass.

Texas Rangers Night on April 10 for GCISD families

Texas Rangers are offering $2 reserved seat upper tier tickets on GCISD Night at the Rangers, April 10, or any other Texas Rangers ISD Night in April, May and June. In addition to the Rangers Student Rewards program, family, employees and friends may purchase tickets for the ISD games for a savings of over 40% off regular gate prices. Tickets are available online at texasrangers.com/isd; use the password RangersISD. Game times are 7:05 p.m. but subject to change. On GCISD Night at the Rangers, April 10, the Cross Timbers Jazz Ensemble Choir will perform the National Anthem.

GCISD welcomes new Principal of Grapevine High School
Veteran educator and campus administrator Shannon Tovar has been selected to join GCISD as principal of Grapevine High School. She currently serves as principal of Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy in Dallas ISD. The Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Board of Trustees approved hiring Tovar at the March 26 meeting.

"Shannon Tovar is a great addition to the GCISD team and GHS community," said Dr. Robin Ryan, Superintendent. "Her strong background in increasing student achievement and vision for designing engaging, relevant instruction for learning, coupled with her collaborative leadership style and ability to build relationships, are a perfect match with the goals of the school and the district. We are excited to welcome Shannon to GCISD and look forward to continuing the long-standing legacy of GHS with her at the helm." Read more.

Board votes to delay implementing 15 percent end-of-course rule
GCISD's Board of Trustees approved a resolution during the regular meeting in March that delays the use of scores from the new State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) in students’ final grades for the 2011-2012 school year only. The resolution suspends the portion of the Board Policy EIA(LOCAL) requiring the new state-mandated ninth grade end-of-course assessments to account for 15 percent of a student's final grade. Fort Worth, Texas magazine is looking for the top teachers in the area as nominated by students, parents, other teachers, school officials and anyone else who wishes to participate. The magazine will recognize 21 independent school districts and area private schools in a feature article planned for publication in August. Record destruction schedule set by state regulations
Consistent with the notification requirements set forth in federal and state regulations regarding the destruction of confidential records, Special Education records for students withdrawn or graduated on or before May 2004, will be destroyed April 12, 2012 (34 CFR 300.624). Students to take STAAR next week

State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) will be administered to students in 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 next week. Testing for 9th graders will be on Monday (Writing) and Tuesday (Reading). The freshman class of 2011–2012 is the first class to have End of Course assessments as part of their graduation requirements. The complete schedule for the week is:

ACT and SAT test practices next two Saturdays

The GHS sophomore class council is hosting a practice SAT test on this Saturday, March 24, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., and a practice ACT test next Saturday, March 31, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Each test costs $20. Forms and additional information are available through teachers Cassie DuBois or Donna English. Forms will be accepted until the Friday afternoon before each test.

Two middle school principals announce retirement plans

Two long-time middle school principals have announced plans to retire at the end of the current school year. Colleyville Middle School Principal Toni Thalken and Cross Timbers Middle School Principal Linda Tidmore announced their retirements at staff meetings on Wednesday. Dr. Robin Ryan, GCISD Superintendent, said Thalken and Tidmore have been exemplary leaders and educators throughout their years of service to their students, teachers, families and stakeholders. Both principals are well-respected in their school communities and among their colleagues, and the success of their students has been the primary focus during their careers. GHS students showcase talents throughout the world this spring

GHS choir students to perform in Italy

For many, Italy is a dream destination filled with delectable food, intriguing culture and a rich history. Some members of the Grapevine High School Choir program, however, see Italy as their next stage. GHS students will join members of the L.D. Bell High School Blue Raider Choir in Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD for a joint performance tour in three locations across Italy, ranging from a 10th Century sanctuary to St. Peters Square.

GHS Choir Director Patrick Antinone organized the trip, which was booked through an international tour company. Antinone, who has facilitated student groups abroad before, believes this trip will be one of the most rewarding experiences for his choir students. Read more about the tour. GHS band heads west to California

Members of the GHS bands just won't be California dreaming - they'll actually be there! The GHS Mustang Band will travel to Los Angeles and San Diego on March 21-25 to showcase their musical talents, when all GHS concert bands perform in a band contest/festival during the trip.. Students will also have an educational experience that exposes the band students to some of the many geographical, historical and cultural areas around the country.

Change in date for 8th grade STAAR math

Eighth grade students will take the Math STAAR on Thursday, March 29, instead of Tuesday, March 27. Students participating in the Math STAAR include 8th grade students enrolled in 8th grade math (Regular and PAP), and any student enrolled in 7th grade accelerated math, regardless of grade level. Middle school students taking Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II will not participate in the 8th grade math STAAR. The students taking high school math courses will take the end-of-course exam associated with the math course. Additional information will be provided by the schools. STAAR resources

Six candidates file for open Board places
Six candidates have filed for a place on the May 12 ballot for the GCISD Board of Trustees election. GCISD voters will have an opportunity to vote for board members to serve in Places 1 and 2. Early Voting begins on April 30 and ends on May 8. Candidates are elected to three-year terms, are unpaid and do not represent specific geographic areas. Candidates on the ballot include: Kimberley Barber Davis - Place; Julia Guzman-Henderson - Place 1; Rick Hinckley - Place 1; Becky St. John- Place 2 (Incumbent); Gary Harrison-Ducros - Place 2; and Michael McCoy - Place 2. Summer programs have something for every student

Registration for summer programs will be available after Spring Break. Programs are innovative, interesting and fun, there are high school courses for credit, enrichment courses for fun, Academy courses for boosting skills, and ESL/Bilingual courses for language acquisition. Celebrate Texas Public Schools Week - March 5-9

GCISD campuses will join students and educators across the state in celebrating Texas Public Schools Week from March 5-9 with a variety of activities. As part of this celebration, parents and community members are invited to visit classrooms and participate in open house events to get a first-hand look into the educational activities in GCISD schools. The schedule of open houses and other campus events for the week is available here.

Campuses select teachers and paraprofessionals of the year
Congratulations to the teachers and paraprofessionals who have been selected as their campus or department's employee of the year.They are eligible to be named the District's elementary or secondary teacher of the year or paraprofessional of the year. All will be recognized at the Employee Appreciation Reception in May at the Grapevine Convention Center, where the District winners will be announced. View the names of the Campus Teachers of the Year and Campus Paraprofessionals of the Year.

No Child Left Behind Report Cards available

No Child Left Behind Report Cards are available for GCISD, each school and the state as a whole and a link to the report cards is available on the district's website in the Assessment, Research and Evaluation department's section. The primary function of NCLB is to close the achievement gap between groups of students by requiring greater accountability and offering increased flexibility and choice. The NCLB Act affects almost every school district and charter school in the state.

No early release on March 7

GCISD’s 2011-2012 Early Release Calendar shows March 7, 2012, as a day when high school students are dismissed early after completion of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Students in grades 10 and 11 will still take the English/Language Arts TAKS on March 7; that day, however, is no longer an early release day and a modified schedule will be in place for all students, including those in grades 9 and 12. Students in grades 10 and 11 should arrive on their campus by 8:35 a.m. on March 7 to begin the TAKS. Those in grades 9 and 12 should arrive by 11:50 a.m. to be counted as present in compliance with state attendance laws. The state requires that students are in attendance a minimum of four hours. Please check your high school website for specific information about lunch, transportation and the modified class schedule.

March 5 last day to file for May Board election

Those interested in having their names on the ballot for the May 12 GCISD Board of Trustees election have through March 5 to file the elections paperwork. GCISD voters will have an opportunity to vote for Board members to serve in Places 1 and 2 during early voting April 30-May 8 and on Election Day, May 12. Four GCISD patrons have filed - Kimberley Barber Davis and Julia Guzman-Henderson have filed for Place 1; Becky St. John, incumbent, and Gary Harrison-Ducros have filed for Place 2. STAAR - The Next Generation for state assessments

The new standardized testing program begins this year and will be phased in, as the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is phased out. Beginning in March, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) will be administered to students in grades 3 through 8, and to high school students enrolled in courses associated with an end-of-course exam. For this year's freshman class, STAAR end-of-course exams will be included in a student's graduation requirements. In addition to completing required coursework, students are required to meet standards on end-of-course exams in order to earn a high school diploma. For the 2011-2012 school year, students in grades 10 and 11 will continue to participate in the TAKS assessments and will not participate in the STAAR assessments. Students in grades 10 and higher as of the 2011-2012 school year will continue to have TAKS as their graduation requirement. If you have questions about the STAAR assessments your child will take, please contact one of the counselors on the campus, the assistant principal or the principal.

Students will be out of school on Monday, Feb. 20, for the Presidents Day Holiday, and Tuesday, Feb. 21, for a professional learning day for staff. School will resume with a regular schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Manasa Sripati, 4th grader at Heritage Elementary School, submitted the artwork that will be used on the front cover of the Elementary Summer Enrichment guide, and artwork by Annemarie Martin, 5th grader at Cannon Elementary School, was selected for use on the inside cover of the printed guide. The theme is “Enriching Students One Class at a Time.” The two students will be recognized in the printed course guide and also at an upcoming meeting of the GCISD Board of Trustees. Employee, students and education foundation honored at Chamber banquet

GCISD had five winners at the Colleyville Area Chamber Awards on January 28. Congratulations to Youth of Year - Alyshah Aziz, GHS, Nathan Weller, GHS; Employee of Year - Terie Wied, CTMS; Organization of Year - Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation. The Colleyville Chamber Awards, in it's 36th year, pay tribute to invididuals, organizations and businesses who have "gone above and beyond" expectations for the Chamber and the community.

High school enrichment planned for summer

This summer, high school students have an opportunity to experience art, cooking and visits to colleges to help them make informed educational decisions about their future. Opportunities include art-related excursions to in DFW and Chicago, visits to colleges and other points of interest in Colorado and Texas, and a culinary arts tour. Registration begins in March. All National Merit semifinalists advance to finalist standing

All 13 Grapevine-Colleyville ISD National Merit Semifinalists have advanced to finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. Of the 13 finalists, ten attend Colleyville Heritage High School and three attend Grapevine High School. The National Merit Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments, the GCISD National Merit Finalists are eligible for Merit Scholarship® awards.

Three candidates file for May Board election

Three GCISD patrons have filed paperwork to have their names on the ballot for the May 12 GCISD Board of Trustees election. Becky St. John, incumbent, has filed for Place 2; Kimberley Barber Davis and Julia Guzman-Henderson have filed for Place 1. GCISD voters will have an opportunity to vote for Board members to serve in Places 1 and 2 during early voting April 30-May 8 and on Election Day, May 12. Candidates may file for a place on the ballot through March 5 at the GCISD Administration Building, 3051 Ira E. Woods Avenue, Grapevine. Trustees serve three-year terms in at-large positions and receive no compensation for their service. A candidate must be a qualified voter, a United States citizen, 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled, never convicted of a felony, and never determined mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court. In addition, an individual seeking election must have been a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district six months prior to the filing deadline. Students get a two-day break from school week of Feb. 20
In observance of Presidents Day, students and staff will have no school on Monday, Feb. 20. District offices will be open. On Tuesday, Feb. 21, students will have an additional day off for a scheduled professional learning day. Students return to school at the regular time on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Timeline adjusted for implementation of middle school College Readiness courses

In response to parent feedback and our desire to ensure that all families are well informed about this initiative, district leaders have adjusted the implementation schedules for the new middle school course structure. The move to College Readiness courses will go into effect for the 2013-2014 school year and will begin in sixth and seventh grades, with phase-in to eighth grade in the following year. Adjusting the timeline will allow for continued professional development with a particular focus on classroom differentiation.

Parents are invited to an informational meeting to discuss changes to the middle school course structure as it relates to the district's LEAD 2021 strategic plan. Superintendent Dr. Robin Ryan and members of the district's instructional leadership team will be on hand to provide historical information about the program and vision for the future, an explanation of the College Readiness courses and curriculum, and the process of transitioning to the new structure. Time will be provided for questions and answers.

A list of Frequently Asked Questions, along with information about the course structure change and required sixth-grade courses, is available on the district website. Questions and responses are being added regularly to the FAQs.

New nutrition guidelines focus on healthy food choices for students

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released new guidelines for school nutrition standards that provide for healthier food options for students. School districts are encouraged to implement the new guidelines as soon as possible, something that will be less of a challenge for GCISD since many of the standards are already part of the menus.The guidelines focus on increasing fruits and vegetables, whole grain-rich foods, and fat-free or low-fat milk varieties; limiting calories; and reducing saturated fat, trans fats and sodium. more about GCISD's nutritional standards

GCISD Middle School Program incorporating stronger College Readiness Focus

Parents of middle school students are invited to attend a meeting on Monday, Feb. 6, that will provide information about recent changes to the middle school curriculum structure. The meeting will be held in the Panther Den of the PDEC, 5800 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The changes are designed to bring the middle school program into alignment with the district’s LEAD 2021 strategic plan to increase the depth of learning, increase student performance and prepare every student for university-level work. Calendar change approved by Board
The first bad weather makeup day in the 2012-2013 Student-Teacher Calendar has been moved from April 1 to March 29 to accommodate the administration of the state English I STAAR test. The revision to the 2012-2013 Student-Teacher Calendar was approved by the Board of Trustees at the regular meeting on Jan. 23. The state testing calendar had not been finalized at the time the 2012-2013 calendar was approved by the Board in December. No other calendared dates have been affected. The revised calendar has been posted in the Calendar section of the website under Find it Fast, and it has been changed on the District's web calendar. Download a .pdf copy of the revised calendar

Bond program Bid Package 3 work underway

Preliminary site work has begun at three campuses as part of the GCISD 2011 Bond Program. Bear Creek Elementary, Silver Lake Elementary and Colleyville Middle schools are receiving additions/renovations as part of Bid Package 3. For Bear Creek, planned work includes four new classrooms, renovation of Special Services classroom bathrooms and expansion of the clinic space. Colleyville Middle will have configuration changes within the boys locker rooms to relocate lockers and benches within the locker room, replacement of the service elevator and some kitchen equipment, and installation of a new fire sprinkler in the main building. Silver Lake will receive a five classroom addition plus three additional resource rooms, two toilet rooms and a storage/electrical room.

Phil Jimerson, construction program manager, says with work progressing at the three schools, patrons will begin to see more signs of construction during the week of February 1. "We anticipate drilling piers and beginning to install utilities at Bear Creek," said Jimerson. "We'll begin drilling piers at Colleyville Middle, and after we receive the building permit for Silver Lake, we can begin grading the site."

Work on Bid Package 1 will begin in February, and work on Bid Package 2 will begin in April. More details about each project, as well as a detailed summary of progress since the last report, are available on the GCISD 2011 Bond Progress Website.

Students and staff shower Board members with gratitude

When Board members arrived at Monday night's meeting, they found their chairs and desktops filled with handmade cards, posters, letters, baked goods and other expressions of "thanks" in conjunction with the statewide appreciation month. Observed each January, School Board Recognition Month provides an opportunity for students and staff to recognize trustees for their tireless efforts throughout the year to make GCISD schools the best in the state. We'd like to share a video that Bear Creek Elementary did, saying "thanks" in many different ways. Watch the video.

Getting to stadium, field house and administration building can be tricky

Driving to GCISD's stadium, field house or administration building? Due to the road construction, the main entrance off of Hwy. 26 is closed and traffic should use the secondary entrance closer to the field house. The entrances off of Mustang Drive are open and may provide easier access. Drive safely!!

GHS Robotics team on its way to finals

Grapevine Green robotics team from Grapevine High School earned first place in its challenge at the TCEA Robotics Competition held on Jan. 14 at Allen High School. Members of the first place team, Brendon Clevenger, Daniel Goodwin and Matthew Warren won first place in the Region 11 Course Challenge and will advance to the Texas Computer Education Association State Competition in April. GHS teacher Jim Faulkner is coach of the Green Team. GCISD was represented by students from Grapevine High School, Colleyville Heritage High School and Heritage Middle School. High school theatre groups offer great entertainment

Both Colleyville Heritage High and Grapevine High are beginning the Spring theatre season on Jan. 27 with exciting productions. The Panther Theatre Dept. will present How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 & 28 and Feb. 2,3 & 4 with additional 2:30 p.m. matinee performance on Jan. 28. Online tickets are available for $8, $12 and $16 at www.chhspanthertheatre.org. The GHS Theatre Dept. will present Jekyll and Hyde. Showtimes are at 7 p.m. on Jan. 27 & 28 and Feb. 3, 4 & 7 and at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29. Ticket prices are $10 for students and $15 for adults. Parent University helps sort through options, opportunities and offerings for next year's students

Colleyville Heritage High School will host its annual Parent University on January 30, 6-8:15 p.m. Parent University is open to parents of all students in grades 8-11 who will be attending CHHS during the 2012-2013 school year, including current CHHS students. The CHHS counseling department will discuss the 2012-2013 course selection process, graduation requirements, Pre-AP and AP courses, dual enrollment and STARR testing. Members of the CHHS faculty will be available for questions related to specific courses. Check the CHHS Counseling website for more details.

National safety speaker featured Tuesday at Southlake school
Organizers of Southlake's Students and Parents Against Risks to our Kids (S.P.A.R.K.) have extended an invitation to area parents and teens, boys and girls in grades 7-12, to attend a free program on safety on Jan. 24 at Carroll Senior High School Auditorium. Topics will include precautions and safety tips involving dating, stalking, college, traveling and daily life. The community event features national child safety advocate, Kathleen Baty, also known as “The Safety Chick.” Baty’s appearance is made possible through donations from community business partners, the City of Southlake and Carroll ISD. Timberline PTA and Children’s Medical Center Dallas begin Children’s Health lecture series
Parents and children throughout the district are invited to learn more about the importance of healthy eating during the first of several presentations about children’s health. Scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 25, 7 p.m. at Timberline Elementary School, “Child Nutrition: Growing Healthy Kids” is sponsored by the Timberline PTA and Children’s Medical Center Dallas. Karen Malouf, a clinical dietitian from Children’s Medical Center Dallas, will speak about the benefits of proper nutrition for children and how parents can help give their children the nutritional building blocks to leading a healthy lifestyle. In observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday, students and staff will have no school on Monday, Jan. 16, and district offices will be closed. On Tuesday, Jan. 17, students will have an additional day off for a scheduled workday for teachers and staff. Students return to school at the regular time on Wednesday, Jan. 18. All-State Band members selected
Seven GCISD students have been selected as members of the Texas Music Educator's Association All-State Band. Auditions were held at Abilene Christian University on Jan. 7 at the Area Band competition. The All-State Band students will attend clinics and perform a final concert in February in conjunction with the Texas Music Educator's Association In-Service and Conference held in San Antonio in February. 2012 Reflections winners announced
Several students who participated in the PTA’s Reflections competition received good news last week, as 13 lucky winners will be moving on to the state competition in Austin. The Reflections contest is a fine arts competition that lets students showcase their skills through several different art forms. Students may submit entries in six categories: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography and film/video. The entries are divided up into grade divisions and all students from preschool through 12th grade may compete. This year’s theme for Reflections was “Diversity Means…” See the list of students who will go to state competition.

With the theme of "Helping Our Kids Shine," Texas School Board Recognition Month provides districts with a formal opportunity to recognize the tireless efforts of school board members. Board members will be recognized by GCISD staff, teachers and students at the first board meeting of the year on Jan. 23. GCISD's school board consists of Karen Deakin, Leon Leal, Lisa Pardo, Jorge Rodriguez, Becky St. John, Charlie Warner and Jesse G. Rodriguez. "All our trustees have demonstrated a passionate determination to make GCISD one of the premier places for children to learn in the State of Texas,” said Dr. Robin Ryan, Superintendent. “The fruits of their labor have been evident in the multiple honors our students and faculty have earned every year. We look forward to 2012 with the firm belief that our board will lead GCISD into the future in a manner consistent with the high expectations set by our community."

How to find out about bad weather school closings

When weather conditions cause potentially hazardous driving conditions, schools may be closed or delayed in starting for the safety of students and staff. GCISD uses multiple methods to notify parents of school delays and school closures. Notices are posted on the District website, sent via FastNews and E-Alerts, posted on GCISD's Facebook and Twitter pages, and on local TV and radio stations. In addition, direct phone and text notifications are sent to parents and employees. No announcements will be made when schools are to remain open. If schools are to be closed for an entire day, that announcement will be made by 6:30 a.m. that day. Early release of classes already in session may be made if it appears that weather conditions are becoming worse and driving would be hazardous.

Notice anything different?

If you have used the GCISD website this week, you have probably noticed the new design. One of the main features is front and center - the rotating photos and announcements. Most frequently used sections are available through icons on the top right part of the page and under Find it Fast. We are continuing to make changes and hope that the new design is more user-friendly when you visit our website.

Important January dates

Students across the district will have several Early Release days this month.

Jan. 10-12 Kindergarten students will be released at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be served.
Jan. 12-13 Middle School students will be released at 12:10 p.m. Lunch will not be served on either of these days.
Jan. 13 High School students will be released at 12:45 p.m. Lunch will not be served.

In addition to the Early Release days there will be no school for students and staff on Monday, January 16 in observance of the Martin Luther King Birthday holiday and no school for students on Tuesday, January 17 when staff will have a workday. Enjoy the short break!

Calendar option "B" approved by Board

School will begin on Monday, Aug. 27, 2012 on the 2012-2013 student/teacher calendar that was approved by the GCISD Board of Trustees at the Dec. 12 meeting. Option B calendar is supported by the District Excellence Committee and the majority of the community. State law requires that public schools begin classes no earlier than the fourth Monday in August, and local waivers for an earlier school start date are no longer an option. Purchasing Services earns Award of Merit

Employees in the GCISD Purchasing Services department have earned high praise from the Texas Association of School Business Officials for the third year in a row. The department will be awarded the Award of Merit for Purchasing and Operations at the annual TASBO conference. The award is given to school districts that are “committed to following professional standards in the acquisition of goods and services.” Read more.

Need something for the kids to do this weekend?

Students in grades K-5 are invited to participate in the Colleyville Heritage High School's Theatre Department's annual Children's Theatre Workshop on Saturday, Dec. 10. This year's theme is The Year Without Santa Claus. Preregistration and additional information are available at www.panthertheater.org

Also on Saturday, Dec. 10, the Grapevine High School Fabulous Fillies Dance Team will host its annual Junior Dance Clinic for elementary and middle school students. It's Tonight - North Texas' largest lighted Christmas parade

With 114 entries, the Grapevine Parade of Lights tonight at 7 p.m., is sure to put you in that holiday mood. GCISD entries include bands from all four middle schools and both high schools, creative floats from many schools, cheerleaders, dance teams and scout groups. The parade begins at Main Street and Hanover Street and goes north on Main Street to Wall Street. Get there early for a prime spot along Main Street and enjoy the Christmas Light Show Spectacular in the Town Square Gazebo while you wait for the parade to begin. Send your best photos from the parade to publicinformation@gcisd.net and we'll include them in a slide show on the website and on Facebook.

Students' art selected for district's holiday greeting card
Three creative holiday designs, one each from the elementary, middle and high school levels, are finalists in the 2011 GCISD Holiday Greeting Cards Contest that featured the theme "Toyland." Sent out on behalf of Superintendent Dr. Robin Ryan and the GCISD Board of Trustees, the cards go to community leaders, area businesses, organizations and other school districts.

Contest winners are:

Elementary - Gabby Debrei, 3rd Grade, Colleyville Elementary School
Middle School - Nora Napper, 6th Grade, Heritage Middle School
High School - Ryan DuGray, 12th Grade, Grapevine High School

Each student will receive $25 gift card to Target and be recognized at the Dec. 12 meeting of the GCISD Board of Trustees. We need your feedback! Two options for the 2012-2013 GCISD Student-Teacher Calendar have been developed based on input from district and campus leaders representing Curriculum and Instruction, Staff Development, and Human Resources as well as members of the community District Excellence Committee. GCISD coordinator wins literacy award

Dr. Mary Arthur, Language Arts Coordinator for GCISD, was honored at Texas Woman’s University last week as a winner of the Billie J. Askew Reading Recovery and Literacy Institute’s Advocate for Excellence in Literacy award. This award is given out annually to school district administrators who have consistently contributed to the success of Reading Recovery and/ or Descubriendo la Lectura and other areas of literacy in their school districts. GHS Fillies officers head to NYC for Macy's parade

The Fabulous Fillies Dance Team Officers from Grapevine High School have been selected to perform in the 85th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade held in New York City on Thursday, Nov. 24, at 8 a.m. CST. The Fabulous Fillies officers will be dancing with the Spirit of America Dancers in a circus-themed entry and will be wearing brightly-colored harlequin costumes. The high-energy production number includes 650 performers from all over the country and is a featured performance in Herald Square. Spirit of America Dancers are tentatively scheduled to begin walking in the parade at about 9 a.m. CST. The best local coverage will be on NBC, Channel 5, as they are guaranteed to broadcast the group number. Read more...

District staff, city emergency responders partner for training
Members of GCISD' s Emergency Operations Planning Team met this week with representatives from the Grapevine and Colleyville fire and police departments to talk through a simulated disaster. The drill scenario involved a tornado, providing an opportunity for the participants to review district and campus plans and roles.

"This simulation was a great opportunity for city representatives and district staff to work together and improve emergency response plans," said Julie Lindley, RN, BSN, and co-chairman of the District EOPT. "Through exercises such as these, we are working toward a goal of better preparedness for the safety of our students and community."

Additional emergency response training drills are being planned for the future.

CHHS earns college readiness recognition

GCISD’s focus on preparing students for higher education was recognized this week as Colleyville Heritage High School was awarded the “2011 College Readiness Award” from the Texas ACT Council. High school football playoffs continue with Friday night's dual matchup of GCISD schools at 7:30 p.m. CHHS will play Mansfield Timberview High at Grand Prairie High's Gopher Stadium, and GHS will play Mansfield High at Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield. GCISD students excel at academic competition
Teams from Colleyville Middle, Grapevine Middle and Bransford Elementary all put forth outstanding performances last weekend, in the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association Competition, capturing top honors at both the student and team levels. Two Colleyville Middle students, Lan Luo and Tony Liu, tied for first in the math competition by earning perfect scores on the math test. The event, which was held at Grapevine Middle, brought in competitors from all over the state and tested their knowledge in mathematics, calculator, number sense and science. Congratulations to these GCISD winners who competed against students from 31 other schools.

STAAR test replacing TAKS in spring

Beginning in spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program at grades 3–8 will assess the same subjects and grades that are currently assessed on TAKS. At high school, however, grade-specific assessments will be replaced with 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments: Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, biology, chemistry, physics, English I, English II, English III, world geography, world history, and U.S. history. more information

DFW Connector Project: Promoting work zone safety through student scholarships
High school students are invited to apply for one of two educational scholarships donated by NorthGate Constructors as part of its effort to promote safe driving practices in the DFW Connector project work zone. NorthGate Constructors is donating $10,000 to the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Education Foundation to manage. Educational scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded to one student from Grapevine High School and one student from Colleyville Heritage High School. Students from freshman through senior classes may apply for the work zone safety scholarships by submitting entries about the importance of driving the posted 50 mph speed limit through the work zone and limiting cell phone usage while driving. more infomation

GCISD FastNews - National test tomorrow of Emergency Alert System

The federal government will conduct the first-ever, nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) at 1 p.m. CST tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011. The purpose of the test is to assess the effectiveness and reliability of the system to alert the entire country during a national emergency. The test will last approximately 30 seconds and will be heard on TV, cable, satellite and radio stations. The test is being conducting by FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Although the EAS is frequently used by state and local governments to send weather alerts and other emergencies, there has never been a national activation of the system. NASCAR takes "Race to Prepare" to CTMS students
Sixth-grade students at Cross Timbers Middle School got a special visit from NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin as part of a FedEx Racing “Race to Prepare” program at the school on Thursday. Approximately 250 students participated in an assembly presented by FedEx and the American Red Cross to teach students about the importance of being prepared for any emergency. As part of the program, 28 students competed in a “Race to Prepare” relay to build emergency kits containing items such as batteries, First Aid supplies, water, flashlights and whistles. Patti Davis, GCISD executive director of administration, kicked off the event with a district welcome. Read more and see photo gallery.

Teacher earns Fellowship for science instruction and mentoring

Christina Middlebrook, a science teacher at Colleyville Heritage High School, was recently named a Fellow of the National Science Teacher’s Association. The award was a total surprise for Middlebrook, who has only been teaching public school for four years. As a Fellow she will travel to the state Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching to help instruct science teachers on strategies and practices for their classrooms. She will also mentor five teachers through an online community and aid them with their teaching strategies throughout the year. In addition to the CAST conference, she will also attend the NSTA’s main conference this year and offer courses for teachers on how to teach science to at-risk student populations. Read more.

Financial Aid "How-To" program offered for college-bound students, parents

Want to learn how to pay for your child's college education? Come to CHHS next Monday evening, Nov. 7, 6:30 p.m. to hear Mike Scott, Director of Financial Aid for Texas Christian University. Scott has numerous years experience teaching people about financial aid, and presents programs all around the United States about financial aid. The information he will be providing is not exclusive to TCU. He will talk about the FASFA, as well as other forms college-bound students will be dealing with when trying to figure out ways to pay for their education.

GCISD's 2011 NCEA Higher Performing Schools recognized
Four GCISD schools — Colleyville Heritage High, Colleyville Middle, O.C. Taylor Elementary and Timberline Elementary — have been named to the 2011 National Center for Education Achievement Higher Performing Schools List . According to the NCEA, schools on the list consistently have more success in preparing students for college and careers than their peers that serve similar student populations. In Texas only 10% of schools are identified as Higher Performing Schools by the organization. Read more

Winners announced for RRW outdoor decor
Schools throughout the GCISD were decorated in red this week in observance of Red Ribbon Week. Three winners were selected as having the best outdoor decorations. Dove Elementary and O.C. Taylor Elementary were selected as winners at the elementary level, and Colleyville Middle is the winner for the secondary level. Dove's theme is "Texas Proud; "O. C. Taylor's theme is "Life is a Journey...Travel Drug Free;" and Colleyville Middle's theme is "!00% Drug Free; Life is a Journey...Travel Drug Free." GMS and GHS robotics teams to compete in area competition on Saturday
This Saturday, two teams of GCISD students, one from Grapevine Middle School and one from Grapevine High School, are showcasing their skills and knowledge in the Dallas Hub of the BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science & Technology) competition. The teams will test their robots against those from 26 other area schools. Both teams have been working on this project since September, designing and crafting their robots so that they can achieve the objectives laid out in the competition’s game field. GCISD student wins 2nd Place in state bus safety poster contest

Colleyville Heritage High student Chris Miguez won second place in Division IV of the Texas School Bus Safety Poster Contest sponsored by the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation. Five district level winners advanced to the regional level poster contest. Chris, as a first place regional winner, then advanced to the state level. Chris won a $100 savings bond and was given a tour of the capital. Read more and see photos.

Red Ribbon Week activities remind students and employees to be drug-free
Next week is Red Ribbon Week at GCISD and students and staff will be participating in a variety of activities designed to reinforce the drug-free message and united students in a stand against illegal drugs. In addition to individual school activities, all GCISD students are invited to participate in a district-wide drug awareness poster contest. The winning posters from each school will be submitted to the district office for judging by Oct. 25, and the winners will be announced on Oct. 26. There also will be a Red Ribbon Week decorating contest at each campus. Judging of exterior decorations will occur on Oct. 25 and interior judging will occur on Oct. 28. High school bands to compete in regional marching band contest on Saturday

The public is invited to watch GCISD's two great high school marching bands in action as they compete at the Region 24 U.I.L. Marching Band Contest on Saturday. The contest is at Standridge Stadium, 1330 W. Valwood Parkway, Carrollton, Texas. Admission is free. The Grapevine High School Mustang Band will compete at 6:45 p.m., followed by the Colleyville Heritage High School Panther Band at 7 p.m. With 201 members competing, the GHS Band will perform its "Bach for the New Millennium" show. The GHS Band is directed by Steve Andre, with assistant band directors Brandt Leondar and J.J. Pipitone. The CHHS band will have 220 students competing and its production entitled "A Celestial Fantasy," arranged by Jeff Ausdemore, associate band director. David Zahrndt is the CHHS band director and Jennifer Vowles is also associate band director. View photos of the bands.

Last parent preview for middle school safety program

Parents of middle school students are invited to attend a preview of "Play it Safe," the Tarrant County Women's Center program on sexual assault. The program will be presented to sixth grade students during Health/PE classes. This is the last of several opportunities for parents to preview this program before it is shown to students. The preview is set for Oct. 26, 10 a.m.-11 a.m., GCISD's Administration Building, 3051 Ira E. Woods Avenue, Grapevine.

Retired teacher receives Humanities Texas Award

Melissa Lamprich, former social studies teacher at Colleyville Heritage High School, received the 2011 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award on Wednesday. Each year Humanities Texas recognizes twelve exemplary teachers of history, literature, foreign language, government, social studies and other humanities in Texas elementary, middle and high schools. Texas Sen. Wendy Davis presented the award to Lamprich. She also received a $5,000 check in recognition of her achievements, and CHHS received $500 to be used for purchasing humanities instructional materials. Homecoming activities for CHHS include parade, pep rally, game and on demand status on Verizon

Colleyville Heritage High School Homecoming kicks off at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday) with a parade on Heritage Avenue in Colleyville, followed by a community pep rally on the field at CHHS. On Friday, festivities continue with a pep rally. The CHHS v.s. Irving High School football game will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Mustang-Panther Stadium. The Homecoming king and queen will be crowned in pregame activities at 7 p.m.; Wall of Honor Inductees Coach Chris Cunningham and Cindi Timmons will be recognized at half time.

Friday night's game will be a Verizon FiOS On Demand High School Football program. For Verizon FiOS customers, the game will be available early next week in the Video on Demand section under Texas High School Sports.

DRIVING NOTICE: Due to the parade, roads around the school (Heritage, Gateway) will be closed beginning at 5:30 p.m. and drivers are encouraged to plan ahead for detours.

Notice of Public Meeting
The Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District will hold a public meeting to discuss the district's rating on the state financial accountability system. Glenhope Elementary named to state honor roll

Glenhope Elementary School has been named to the Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll for 2011, the most prestigious award for sustained, academic excellence in Texas. GLES is one of only 200 schools that will be honored out of the 8,000 schools in Texas. The TBEC Honor Roll recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard -commended - in every subject. TBEC was formed in 1989 by Texas business leaders to engage with educators in a long-term effort to improve public education in Texas. Read more.

Debate, speech, oral interpretation students earn National Forensic League awards
Grapevine High School's National Forensic League chapter, comprised of students who compete in debate, speech, and oral interpretation, has earned the 2010-11 Leading Chapter Award in the Lone Star District. Based on student participation, the award is the highest honor from the NFL, and GHS is one of only 107 schools nationwide to receive the award. There are 2800 NFL chapters nationwide and only one school in each competing district receives this designation each year. Read more.

The National Merit Scholarship Program has named CHHS student as National Achievement Scholar, an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. The achievement scholar is included in a nationwide group of about 3,100 outstanding participants and will be referred to colleges for his potential for academic success. In addition, Eleven students from GCISD have been named National Hispanic Scholars by the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP). Students must be at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino as defined by the NHRP, meet the minimum PSAT/NMSQT cutoff score, and achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement. Read more...

National musical recognition given to two middle school groups

The Cross Timbers Middle School Honors Band and Heritage Middle School Men of Heritage Choir are sharing a piece of excellence as both groups have been named “2011 National Winners” in the National Wind Honors and National Choral Honors Mark of Excellence recorded music contest. GHS Ecology Center receives award for excellence in learning

GHS Science teacher Deanna Showalter and her students were recognized at the September Board of Trustees meeting for their efforts in the GHS Ecology Center, which is receiving the Outstanding Program Award presented by the Texas Outdoor Education Association. The award is given to schools and organizations that effectively incorporate outdoor environments into meaningful learning opportunities for students. Showalter and her students oversee the care and maintenance of the GHS Ecology Center that is used for instruction in all major content areas by students at GHS, CTMS and TES.

Reflections Contest encourages student art, music, dance writing

The Reflections Contest for the year 2011-2012 is underway with the theme “Diversity Means.” All students are encouraged to express their creativity and artistic talents in the annual PTA Reflections Contest. The contest categories include: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. Applications are available in each school office or online at the GCISD Council of PTAs website, http://www.txpta.org/programs/reflections. Entries are due on or before October 31st.

Nutrition Services serves up a new parent newsletter

Want to know more about what your child is eating at his or her school? Or maybe you need some inspiration for quick, easy, yet healthy meals and snacks. GCISD's Nutrition Services new parent newsletter, Around the Plate, will whet your appetite with it's news about upcoming specials in the cafeteria, links to healthy recipes and suggestions for healthy snacks. The newsletter is available on the Nutrition Services website. You may subscribe to the newsletter e-alert by signing in to the website (SIGN IN button at the top right corner), then ACCESS MY INFO>SUBSCRIPTIONS>ADD AREA. GHS Homecoming this week

Grapevine High School celebrates homecoming this week with the parade tonight at 6 p.m. on Main Street, pep rally following the parade and the football game against L.D. Bell on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Please note: Due to construction, several changes have been made to the parade's starting location. If you plan to attend the parade or participate in the parade, please read this information about the changes. The pep rally will be held in the parking lot behind Los Amigos, across from First Baptist Church after the parade. For Friday night's football game, avoid parking hassles by parking at GHS and riding the shuttle to and from Mustang-Panther Stadium.

Students named National Merit Scholars

Fourteen GCISD seniors have been named 2012 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Eleven attend Colleyville Heritage High School and three attend Grapevine High School. Selection is based on students' scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT.)

Is it Mash the Mustangs or Declaw the Panthers? Tonight is the annual football matchup between the CHHS Panthers and the GHS Mustangs. Mustang-Panther Stadium will be full of loyal fans and good-natured rivalry. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. Photos below are from the pep rallies at CHHS, left, and GHS, right. Please note that game traffic WILL BE HEAVY and build in extra time to get to the game. Take advantage of the free parking available at Grapevine High School with shuttles running back and forth throughout the game.

Foundation ‘kicks off’ annual community-wide campaign tonight

The annual gridiron match-up between GCISD’s two high schools is also the time each year when the G-C Education Foundation launches its annual community-wide giving campaign. During a special pregame presentation, students and Foundation representatives will ceremonially “kick-off” the campaign in true Friday night football style. In addition, fans are invited to visit the Foundation booths on both sides of the field to vote for their favorite GCISD school to win a $500 grant. Two grants will be awarded – one for the elementary school and one for the secondary school that each receive the most votes. The winning schools will be announced during the third quarter of the game. Since its inception in 1998, our Education Foundation has funded more than 875 projects and distributed more than $1.4 million in grants and scholarships to our schools. Foundation grants have provided funds for new programs that benefit students, materials for students and parents, and support for district-wide initiatives. The Foundation also has invested an additional $1 million in an endowment to support future efforts.

New apps created for the Mustangs and Panthers
GCISD varsity football fans have a new tool to use in finding out about their favorite teams' scores, getting player information, schedules and much more. The all-new apps are available for the Grapevine Mustangs and Colleyville Heritage Panthers – each football program has a new mobile app/website for the 2011 season. The football booster clubs from both teams teamed up with MobiTree to offer the Mobi -- an exclusive mobile information hub for Mustang and Panther fans. Class of 2011 increases participation, scores on SAT college readiness exam
GCISD students and their families continue to place a strong emphasis on college preparedness, with more students taking the 2011 SAT college readiness exam over last year and increases in scores in all three subject areas tested. Positive signs of GCISD’s mission to prepare students for higher education were demonstrated recently through the 2011 SAT scores and participation numbers for the district. A total of 833 students in GCISD’s Class of 2011 took the exam, rising by 130 students from last year’s total of 703 participants. Colleyville Heritage High had a record-high participation of 452 students while Grapevine High saw an increase of 67 students over last year for a total of 381 participating. Read more...

GHS student receives special honor from Texas Tech President

Dr. Guy Bailey, President of Texas Tech University, made a special visit Grapevine High on Monday to talk with the senior class about the value of higher education. Little did students know that Bailey also had a surprise prepared for one of their own. After his address, the president invited senior Kyle Wahl to join him on stage. He then surprised Kyle by informing him that he was the first student in the nation to be accepted to Texas Tech for fall 2012 term – and then he presented Kyle with a scholarship for $16,000. GHS Ecology Center wins state award for outstanding outdoor education program

Congratulations to Grapevine High School's Ecology Center for being selected to receive the Texas Outdoor Education Association Outstanding Program award. This prestigious award is given to schools and organizations that effectively incorporate outdoor environments to facilitate learning related to the school curriculum.

The GHS Ecology Center is designed to bring the natural, living world into as many students lives as possible. It is used by classes across all major content areas as well as by students at Timberline Elementary and Cross Timbers Middle School. The Center is under the direction of GHS Science teacher Deanna Showalter.

Showalter will accept the award on behalf of GHS during a special celebration on October 1 at the annual TOEA Fall Workshop.

High school football game traffic:

Drivers urged to use overflow parking and free shuttle at GHS

Fans heading to GCISD’s Mustang-Panther Stadium for high school football games this fall should allow extra travel time because of ongoing construction at the intersection of Texas 26 and Mustang Drive, along Texas 26 in front of the stadium, and along the Texas 114 corridor through Grapevine. During the school day, all but two entrances to the stadium are closed to maintain safety in the parking lot while traffic is re-routed to alleviate congestion at the nearby intersection. On game days, all entrances will be opened at 5:30 p.m. for game parking. Grapevine Police will assist with traffic management during peak game traffic.

The Grapevine Police Department and GCISD have partnered in the iWatch Grapevine program to teach students how to be responsible digital citizens. Through the mobile app, iWatch Grapevine is a proactive, hands-on, program that puts crime tipping and crime reporting into the palm of your hand, allowing individuals to get information about crimes in Grapevine and submit tips on their cell phones or PDAs.

ACT scores indicate students ready for college
Average scores on the ACT college-readiness exam topped out at record levels for the second consecutive year, according to results received recently by the district. GCISD student performance in all four areas of the exam – English, Mathematics and Reading and Science – increased slightly from last year, and the average composite district score increased from 24.1 to 24.5. Temporary detour planned for high school traffic
Anyone driving to GHS, CTMS and TES urged to plan ahead

With the beginning of school on Monday, Aug. 22, parents, students and employees of the three schools near the intersection of Texas 26 and Mustang Drive should allow extra travel time to school because of ongoing construction. To help alleviate congestion at that intersection, Grapevine High school traffic headed south on Texas 26 from the north Grapevine area is being re-routed through the Mustang-Panther Stadium Parking lot. Drivers will be directed to enter the lot from the entrance closest to the district administrative offices and follow the marked route to Mustang Drive. All other entrances to the stadium will be closed. Grapevine Police will assist with traffic management at peak traffic times.

Federal Report Card shows continued achievement, some challenges for GCISD
GCISD students continue to exceed standards on the 2011 Adequate Yearly Progress Report (AYP) released Friday by the Texas Education Agency. The district and 15 of its 18 schools evaluated for AYP met expectations on all indicators, and all schools met AYP on participation. Two schools - Grapevine High School and Cross Timbers Middle School - did not meet AYP in areas of student performance while Bridges Accelerated Learning Center missed the AYP standard for graduation rate. Finalist selected for Grapevine Elementary Principal
Kim Blackburn is being recommended as the sole finalist for principal at Grapevine Elementary School pending Board approval. Formerly an elementary assistant principal in Clear Creek ISD near Houston, Blackburn brings 13 years of varied experience in the classroom and campus-level leadership. The GCISD Board of Trustees will act on the recommendation during a special meeting on August 8. Read more about Blackburn.

High schools make national lists reflecting top-notch college preparation
Colleyville Heritage was named #305 on Newsweek's national list of Best High Schools, and Grapevine High was ranked #268 in Washington Post's America's High School Challenge 2011. Newsweek's list was created using a new methodology that better reflects a school's success in getting students ready for college. The Washington Post has ranked Washington area schools for several years on how they prepare students for college. This is the first year that they have expanded the High School Challenge to include schools nationwide. Read more here.

Join in the Texas Star Welcome for new educators
GCISD has a strong tradition of welcoming new educators in style and this year is not any different. Sponsored by the Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation, A Texas Star Welcome luncheon is set for Tuesday, Aug. 9, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Grapevine Convention Center. There are several ways you can participate, from table sponsorship to providing door prizes or sponsoring a teacher. Visit the GC Education Foundation website for details, sponsorship forms and reservation information for the lunch.

Varsity Football reserved season tickets on sale next week
Reserved season tickets for the Grapevine High School and Colleyville Heritage High School varsity football games will be on sale beginning Monday, August 8, for current season ticket-holders to repurchase their same seats. The cost of the five-game ticket packet for CHHS is $45.The cost of the four-game packet for GHS is $36. Payment may be made by check (payable to GCISD) or cash. Ticket sales to the general public will begin Friday, August 19. More information is available on the Athletic and Activities website.

2010 season ticket-holders may repurchase their same seats August 8-12, 15 & 16. Betterment Day will be held on Thursday, August 18. All 2010 season ticket-holders may purchase any season tickets that are unsold. ALL SEASON TICKET SALES ARE FINAL. NO REFUNDS, NO EXCHANGES.

Ticket sales to the general public will begin Friday, August 19.

Student lunch prices will increase by five cents in order to meet new USDA regulations. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires that the costs of meals increase to reduce the difference in the cost of a full-price student lunch and a free lunch. The US Department of Agriculture currently reimburses Grapevine-Colleyville ISD $2.72 for free lunches for 2010-2011. The new prices for the 2011-2012 will be $2.05 for elementary students and $2.30 for secondary students. Breakfast and cost of meals under the free and reduced program will remain the same. As additional guidance is provided by USDA, further meal prices may be required in future years.

GCISD retains Recognized status
Grapevine-Colleyville ISD has maintained a rating of Recognized for 2011 under the current state accountability system. In addition, 10 GCISD schools achieved the state’s highest rating of Exemplary. School and district ratings were released Friday by the Texas Education Agency.

“Our students continue to excel and that is due to the diligent work of everyone involved in educating our students,” said Dr. Robin Ryan, Superintendent. “While these ratings are one measure of success, they do not fully capture the excellence of our students and staff. I am proud of the work of our students, educators, families and volunteers. Online registration open for returning students
For students returning to GCISD, online registration for 2011-2012 is available through the Skyward Family and Student Access website saving parents and students time at the school. Elementary registration opened on July 25 and secondary (middle and high school) registration begins next week. The online process includes the completion of the student directory information form, health form and the agreement to communicate via email. Students and parents are still required to attend their school's registration to verify residency, and for secondary students, to pay any athletic/activity fees if not paid online and pick up schedules. Summer program registration continues
"I'm bored!" If you've heard those words and would like to find something for your child to do for a few more weeks, check out activities continuing through the week of Aug. 15 at KidzU Summer Camp for those in grades K-8 . Free summer meals for students
Through a program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, GCISD has been providing free summer meals for students 18 and under.The Texas Legislature mandates participation of schools that have 60 percent or greater of students who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals. For the remainder of summer, breakfast is offered from 7-8:30 a.m. and lunch is offered from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the following sites:

Grapevine Middle: June 14 – July 29 (M-Th)
Cross Timbers Middle: June 6 – August 5

No proof of age or residency is required. Meals must be consumed at the school with no take-outs allowed. More information.
