GCISD reduces energy costs across district

surge protector In August, the Board of Trustees received a presentation on the status of the district partnership with Cenergistic where they learned that GCISD has saved $618,620 in projected energy costs since the program began. This equates to eliminating 645 passenger cars from roadways for one year.
“The staff’s efforts to reduce energy costs across the district has been a true team effort,” said Paula Barbaroux, GCISD chief operations officer. “From changing maintenance and operations procedures to making personal changes or adjustments and shutting down equipment and closing blinds, we are helping our district reduce energy waste, save money and be better stewards of our community and environment.”
The program began in January 2015, and, since that time, the district has made proactive efforts in reducing energy usage. District staff members work directly with Cenergistic to make changes to the heating and cooling systems and irrigation systems, take part in district-wide shutdowns for breaks, as well as make general behavior changes to reduce daily energy waste. Cenergistic additionally checks for equipment that is running when it shouldn’t be, for example, at 2 a.m.
“GCISD staff participation in our energy-reduction practices has been vital to the success of the program,” said Kent Hall, Cenergistic energy specialist for GCISD. “I appreciate the response from staff members across GCISD for our major shutdowns, as well as the daily changes to reduce energy costs in the district. As I visit campuses and other district facilities, I see the efforts all staff members are making to help GCISD thrive in this program and thank them for their support."
