Debate, speech, oral interpretation students earn National Forensic League awards

Grapevine High School's National Forensic League chapter, comprised of students who compete in debate, speech, and oral interpretation, has earned the 2010-11 Leading Chapter Award in the Lone Star District. Based on student participation, the award is the highest honor from the NFL, and GHS is one of only 107 schools nationwide to receive the award. There are 2800 NFL chapters nationwide and only one school in each competing district receives this designation each year.

In addition, Grapevine High School's NFL was named to the 200 Club. This national recognition indicates that Grapevine is in the top 5% of all schools, with 200 members and degrees in its chapter last year. Students qualify for membership in the National Forensic League after gaining 25 points through contest participation. With continued participation and success students gain more points, leading to additional degrees within the organization.

This is the third time GHS has received the Leading Chapter award and the sixth time for the school to be named to the 200 Club. A school must wait at least five years before being eligible for the award again. The Grapevine Debate team is coached by Jane Boyd and the Oral Interpretation team is coached by Grant Hahn.

"Receiving the Leading Chapter Award and the 200 Club award are a great honor," said Jane Boyd, GHS debate coach and sponsor of the NFL club. "The recognition validates and recognizes the dedicated work, effort and successful tournament participation of our students.  Students spend a minimum of 15-20 hours a week in preparation and then entire weekends competing. We are excited and honored to receive these awards."

Grapevine High School's NFL chapter currently has 182 members and degrees, with 75 students active in the speech, debate and oral interpretation program. Students participate in 13 different events including Policy Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Congressional Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking (Internationals and United States), Original Oratory, Prose, Poetry, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation and Duet Acting. They also participate in the Rotary four-way test contest, and the International Public Forum Debates.
