GCISD schools honor veterans with Veterans Day events

Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11 and many schools are putting together activities to honor the men and women who served and are currently serving our country. Programs featuring guest speakers and patriotic activities are planned throughout the district. (Information will be added as is it received from the schools.)

Bear Creek Elementary: Everyone is encouraged to wear red, white and blue on Nov. 11. There will be a Veterans Day program the same day at 1:45 p.m. featuring the BCES Choir. The BCE choir will perform at the DFW Airport/American Airlines terminal for  troops on Friday morning.

Glenhope Elementary:  There will be two programs held on Nov. 10 to honor veterans. The first program will begin at 8:15 a.m. and the second one will begin at 9:00 a.m. The second program will be followed by a reception for the veterans. Both programs will include performances by the Glenhope Choir.
 
Colleyville Elementary:  A banner will be displayed with thank you messages from all students. Students were given the opportunity to write letters to our veterans and those letters will be distributed during the week. Morning announcements will highlight a veteran each morning, with the veteran telling about his service. The campus will be decorated with flags and red and blue.

Dove Elementary: The Veterans Day program will take place in the DES gym on Nov.  11 beginning at 2 p.m.

Heritage Elementary: There will be a Veterans Day program at HES beginning at 8:00 a.m.

O.C. Taylor Elementary:  Students donated $1 to wear a hat in school as well as Wal-Mart gift cards for veterans at the Fort Worth VFA hospital on Nov. 4 during "Tip Your Hat to Veterans Day". Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. third and fourth graders will sing patriotic songs. There will also be a speaker who is a WWII veteran. Donations for the VFA hospital will also be collected during the program.

Cross Timbers Middle: At 8:30 a.m. an assembly will be held to honor veterans with guest speaker Capt. Bart Roberts, a Navy veteran and current pilot for American Airlines.

Grapevine High:  On Nov. 11, Grapevine High School will offer several events throughout the day to honor our veterans. The first activity is the Red Carpet Walk of Honor, which begins at 8:25 a.m. Everyone is then invited to attend the program “A Tribute to Veterans” in Madeleine Hemley Auditorium at 8:45 a.m. Veterans will then be treated to breakfast in the GHS library,  followed by a dedication in the Veteran’s Memorial Garden at 10:30 a.m. Anyone wishing to attend should RSVP by calling 817-251-5210.  All veterans attending are encouraged to wear their medals.
