2006
Texas School Survey of Drug and Alcohol Use
In
spring 2006, the GCISD utilized the Texas School Survey of Drug
and Alcohol Use as a needs assessment tool for the GCISD Safe
and Drug Free Schools Program. This survey is sponsored by the
Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and implemented by
the Public Policy Research Institute at Texas A&M. It has
been administered to students in the GCISD every other year since
1998. In 2006, a random sample of 4th through 12th grade students
were selected to participate in the survey.
The
presentation on this website represents some of the findings from
the 2006 survey. The slides provide information comparing GCISD
data over the last eight years across specific grade levels and
in comparison with state data. All data are represented by percentages
and are presented in bar and line graph form.
Although,
steps have been taken to try and maintain the validity of the
survey, sampling error and the limitations of student self-reports
can impact the survey findings. Survey administrators recommend
that specific attention should be focused on data differences
of five or more percentage points.
Again,
the purpose of the survey is to provide direction concerning substance
abuse prevention planning in the GCISD. We hope that this information
will also be of value to you as you plan discussions with your
child regarding drug, alcohol and tobacco use. If you are interested
in other substance abuse prevention resources, or if you have
any questions or comments concerning the survey, please contact
