Bank Safe Deposit Box Fireproof
A fireproof safe is the kind of thing you buy in the hope that its capabilities will never be put to the test. But when the time comes, the safe will likely be worth much more than what you paid for. We’ve tested more than a dozen safes over the years, and even burned five of them in a controlled fire, and we’re confident that Honeywell’s 1114 Lightweight Waterproof Safe is the best document safe you can get for your home or office. It is independently rated to outlast other safes of its size in high temperature fires and will keep contents dry longer when submerged in water. This means that among the document vaults we’ve seen, it has the potential to keep your belongings safe, including irreplaceable documents, photos, and essentials like passports and birth certificates.

While there are safes that offer more protection against fire, it’s important to note that they are not specifically designed for documents like the ones we have chosen and have other drawbacks. For starters, they cost at least three times (and often several times) our top picks, and they’re so heavy (at least 100 pounds) that they’re hard to move once in place. Also, according to one fire expert we spoke to, protection ratings of more than two hours yield diminishing returns, as most home fires occur within about an hour.
The 1114 is certified to be twice as resistant to high-temperature fires as its competitors, but it weighs 42 pounds and takes up as much room as a mini fridge.
The lightweight, waterproof Honeywell 1114 enclosure has been independently verified by the Intertek safety organization to protect personal items during a fire in temperature conditions of up to 1700°F for up to one hour (twice the competition time). reaches a peak of about 2,000°F, but this type of heat occurs at the highest points of your home, namely the attic, or at least the ceiling. Closer to where you store your case will be cooler. Honeywell also says the case will keep the shower and floodwater out for 100 hours. Large enough to hold both letter and legal size paper without the need to fold it. This added protection makes the 1114 noticeably larger and heavier than other cases with similar capacities – it weighs 42 pounds and takes up the same amount of space as a mini fridge. But we think the price and size are worth tolerating, as it definitely gives your material a better chance of surviving a disaster.
This model is the most affordable for its size and is rated to withstand fire as well as any other safe in its price range.
What Should I Keep In A Safe Deposit Box?
Larry McKenna, a fire protection engineer with the U.S. Fire Administration, told us “you should get the best [insurance] you can afford”. Sold only at Harbor Freight, the Union Safe Company Waterproof and Fireproof Document Safe is the best choice if you can’t afford to spend $100 on a safe or have limited space. It is large enough to hold 8.5 x 11 inch paper without curling the edges and is rated to withstand a fire of 1,550°F for 30 minutes. That’s half the power and a significant reduction in temperature protection compared to our top pick, so choosing this case means you risk losing what’s inside in the event of a disaster. But every fire is different and this safe is better than nothing. On the plus side, it takes up much less space than the Honeywell and weighs just 28 pounds, so it’s easier to move around when needed. Take care of your keys: Unlike every other brand whose safes we’ve tested, Union Safe makes it clear that it’s not a replacement for lost keys.
Large enough to hold hanging folders and tough enough to last up to an hour on fire, the 80lb 1108 weighs twice as much as the Honeywell 1114.
The Honeywell 1108 Fire/Water Large File Box is a larger version of our favorite safe with the same one hour flammability rating. This 84-pound giant is designed to hold letter and legal-size hanging file folders; this is convenient if you have a lot of documents or just want to keep your stuff organized. But moving is a big deal.
The 2037F is large enough to store folders of files and documents, but has a recording speed of only 30 minutes. We recommend it if you just want to save some money or don’t have room for a giant safe.
Are Safety Deposit Boxes Fireproof?
The First Alert 2037F Fire and Water Resistant File Box is the most affordable model designed to store letter-size hanging file folders. It has a 30-minute flammability rating and, having tested this category for years, we were impressed with First Alert cases for their robust, reliable build quality and affordable price for the level of protection they provide. Unfortunately many have been discontinued, so be sure to grab the 2037F if you’re interested.
Fortunately, I have no experience with what happens to the safe in a real house fire. So, in our first test run, I worked with professional firefighters to accurately simulate this scenario and learn how safes work in real fires. My father and grandfather were volunteer firefighters with 80 years of combined experience. They helped us design, build and burn test equipment as close as possible to a house fire. I also spoke to UL’s John Drengenberg and spoke to Larry McKenna, a US fire protection engineer, to understand what the certification body is looking for when testing safes. 🇧🇷
Since 2014 I’ve been a writer at Wirecutter covering Apple products, accessories, and a host of other categories. I published this guide first when I had to decide what to buy.
Document safes are intended to provide protection against fire, water and (to some extent) theft for people who want to keep their important belongings safe in an office or home. Best for valuable or hard-to-replace documents like passports and birth certificates, or small items like hard drives or USB sticks. Most people will find a good use for a fireproof safe when preparing for travel or major financial transactions, or adding an extra layer of security to a drive full of valuable digital photos.

Fireproof safes should not be theft-proof or function as puncture-proof time capsules. If you have jewelry, precious metals, or anything else of high value that you don’t need to access often, consider a safe that’s fixed to the floor or even a safety deposit box at a local bank. It’s not as easy for a thief to break into the bank as it is to break into your home. These document safes are also not gun safes and should not be used as such.
Cases hold moisture, so it’s important to ventilate regularly, and some manufacturers recommend storing important items, including jewelry, in airtight containers. We cover this issue in more detail in the maintenance and repair section below.
For this guide, we were looking for smaller, fireproof safes that fit under a desk or in a closet, not expensive professional setups or gun safes. This is the type that is heavy and safe but still ready to be lifted and transported when needed. A document safe needs to be fireproof and waterproof (hence “flood proof”) and have a locking mechanism that keeps opportunistic intruders out.
The three big brands – First Alert, Honeywell, and SentrySafe – make most of the fireproof safes you’ll find for home use, and there are a few other safes with smaller options. Here’s what to consider when deciding which models to try and choose:
Is A Safe Deposit Box Really Safe?
We trusted UL and Intertek’s testing procedures, but which of our safe finalists for our first round of testing in 2016 (First Alert’s 2030F and 2603DF, which has been discontinued since then, from SentrySafe to the CHW30100 and FHW40200 and Bal 110) HOW IT MAINTAINED So, with the help of trained firefighters, we built a 4-by-8-by-8-foot plywood room and placed drywall inside for radiant heat, then filled it with flammable seat cushions, rugs, cardboard, and crates with some wood (video) and illuminate (video).
It should be noted that this test is not an attempt to completely eradicate it. We were looking for success, not failure. A safe can fail for a variety of reasons unrelated to its construction, such as how firefighters handle the safe. In this test,
