After another round of searching, no new safes met our criteria. If the Honeywell cabinets we recommend are out of stock or have increased in price, check out the options at other great Fireproof Cabinets.

A fireproof safe is something you buy in the hope that its properties will never be tested. But if the time comes, the insurance will most likely be worth much more than what you paid. We’ve tested over a dozen safes over the years, even burning 5 of them with a controlled flame, and we’re confident that the Honeywell 1114 Lightweight Fire and Watertight Cabinet is a good filing cabinet. The best you can buy for your home or office. It is independently rated to last longer in high temperature fires than other safes of the same size and keep contents dry longer when submerged in water. This means it has the most potential of any archiver we’ve ever seen to keep your stuff – including documents, photos and irreplaceable essentials like passports and birth certificates – safe and secure.
It is important to note that while there are safes that offer a higher level of fire resistance, they are not specifically designed for materials like our choice and have other drawbacks. For starters, they are at least three times more expensive than our first choice (and often several times), and they are so heavy (at least 100 pounds) that they are difficult to move. Also, according to a fire expert we spoke to, its two-hour protection rating offers a decrease in effectiveness since most house fires are extinguished in about an hour.
The 1114 is certified to withstand fire at high temperatures for twice as long as the competition, but weighs 42 pounds and has the footprint of a mini-fridge.
The Honeywell 1114 Lightweight Waterproof and Fireproof Chest is independently verified by the Intertek safety organization to keep personal items safe during a fire for up to one hour – twice as long as competition time – for up to one hour. . A house fire can peak at about 2,000°F, but that kind of heat is found in the highest points of your home, namely the attic or at least the roof. Closer to the floor, where you keep the safe, is cooler. Honeywell also says the safe prevents splashes and splashes for 100 hours. It is large enough to hold paper and legal paper without having to fold it. The extra layer of protection makes the 1114 significantly larger and heavier than other safes of similar capacity—it weighs 42 pounds and takes up the same floor space as a mini-fridge. But we think the price and size are worth it, as this safe gives your belongings a better chance of surviving a disaster.

This model is the most affordable for its size and is rated to last in the fire like any other in its price.
Larry McKenna, a fire protection engineer at the United States Fire Agency, tells us that you should “buy the best [safety] you can afford.” Union Safe Company’s water and fire safes, sold exclusively at Harbor Freight, are your best bet if you can’t spend $100 on a safe or if you have limited space. It is large enough to hold 8.5 x 11 inch sheets of paper without warping the edges and is rated to withstand a 1,550°F flame for 30 minutes. It is half as durable and the temperature protection drops significantly as our first choice, so choosing this safe means that you are more at risk of losing your content in case of disaster. But every fire is different, and this sure thing is better than not sure. On the plus side, it has a much smaller footprint than the Honeywell and weighs only 28 pounds, so it’s easier to move around if needed. Just be careful with the keys: Unlike all the other safes we tested, Union Safe makes it clear that it cannot replace lost keys.
Big enough to hold folders and durable enough to last up to an hour in a fire, at 80 pounds, the 1108 weighs twice as much as the Honeywell 1114.
The Honeywell 1108 Water/Fire Resistant Large File Chest is a larger version of our best safe, with the same one-hour fire rating. This 84-pound behemoth is designed to hold legal and mail-sized folders, which is useful if you have a lot of documents or just want to keep things organized. But moving is a big hassle.

The 2037F is large enough to hold folders of files and documents, but it only has a write time of 30 minutes. We only recommend it if you want to save some money or don’t have room for a giant safe.
The First Alert 2037F Fire and Water Resistant File Chest is the most affordable model designed to hold hanging letter-sized files. It has a 30 minute fire rating, and over the years of testing this category, we have been impressed with First Alert safes for their reliable solid build quality and affordability for this level of protection. Unfortunately, many of them have been discontinued, so be sure to get the 2037F if you’re interested.
Fortunately, I have no experience with what happens to safes in a real house fire. So, for our initial tests, I worked with the firefighters to accurately simulate the scenario and learn how the safety works in a real fire. My father and grandfather were both volunteer firefighters with a combined 80 years of experience. They helped us design, build and burn a test rig that looked as much like a home fire as possible. I also interviewed UL’s John Drengenberg to understand what certification bodies look for when they test safes, and I spoke with Larry McKenna, a fire protection engineer with the US Fire Department who explained how how hot the fires were and how long they lasted.
I’ve been writing at Wirecutter since 2014 and I’ve covered Apple products, accessories and many other categories. I originally published this guide after having to make a decision on which course to buy for myself.
All You Need To Know About Safe Boxes
File cabinets are intended to provide protection against fire, water and (to some extent) theft for those who want to store important things in an office or home. They are best suited for hard-to-replace or valuable documents – such as passports and birth certificates – or small items such as hard drives or USB keys. Most people can find a fireproof safe to be useful, if you want to prepare for travel or major financial transactions or if you just want to add an extra layer of security to a trip.
Fireproof safes are not intended to prevent theft or act as an impenetrable time capsule. If you have jewelry, precious metals, or anything else of high value that you don’t use often, consider a safe anchored to your floor or even a safe deposit box at your local bank. Burglars breaking into a bank vault is not as easy as breaking into your home. These archive files are also not safe and should not be used as such.
The safe traps moisture, so it is important to leave it out regularly, and some manufacturers recommend that important items, including jewelry, are sealed in an airtight container. We address this further in the Care and Maintenance section below.
For this guide, we weren’t looking for expensive professional installations or gun safes, but smaller fireproof safes that fit under a desk or in a closet. This is heavy and sturdy, but ready to be lifted and moved if necessary. The archive must be fireproof and waterproof (and therefore also “floodable”), with a locking mechanism to keep out intruders.

The big three brands—First Alert, Honeywell, and SentrySafe—make most of the fireproof safes you’ll find for home use, and there are several other brands that have smaller options. Here’s what we look for when deciding which model to try and choose:
We trust UL and Intertek testing procedures, but for our first round of testing in 2016 we wanted to see for ourselves how safe the finalists (2030F) and the discontinued First Alert 2603DF, SentrySafe’s CHW30100 and FHW40200, and Honeywell. up to 1106′ 0, and Honeywell) of house fires and what they look like next. So, with the help of trained firefighters, we built a 4 x 8-foot room out of plywood and double-core panels, and installed drywall inside to dissipate the heat. So we filled it with flammable sofa cushions, a rug, cardboard and some wood, put it in the safe (video) and lit the fire (video).
We must note that this experiment was not an attempt at total destruction. We are looking for success, no
