How To Make Aerial 360 Panorama
There are many ways to take pictures to create your own panoramic image with a camera drone. You can manually set the camera and shoot to take the photos you want, record 4K footage as you make it and download the frames you want later, or if you’re flying a DJI Phantom Mavic Pro, you can use an app like DronePan or Inspire.

If you’re shooting handheld or selecting diamonds from a video clip, make sure the image is 50-70% full as you process it during burn-in. This ensures that you have enough information for the embroidery software to do its job.
I usually do a rotation looking right at the camera at 90º, then another full tilt at 60º, then another 30º and finally straight at 0º (nadir). If it’s a clear blue sky above you, you might not want to take a direct picture at 180º (up), but since that’s hard to do with a drone, at least take one with your iPhone so you can edit it later.
Depending on the size of the shot and how wide your camera’s FOV (like a GoPro) is, you can even make three full frames at 90/45/0.
The DronePan app allows you to automatically adjust the changes in the photo and automatically detect the aircraft you are flying. If you’re using the DJI Inspire, you can add a row of +30º “sky” photos to fill the top of your panel.

It’s important to keep your height and position as close as possible, so your front sight doesn’t vary from row to row. Having a good GPS can really help you avoid strong winds.
As far as exposure, I usually shoot on a DJI Phantom 3, 4 Pro, or Inspire 1 with the ND8-PL filter from PolarPro, depending on the location and time of day, and let the camera automatically set the exposure for the pan. .
This allows me to capture details, whether I’m facing the rising or setting sun in the same direction. Fortunately, today’s sewing software fully compensates for the difference and provides a complete unfinished image without excess / unplanned areas in the finished product. Everything else can be easily edited in Photoshop/Lights.
The term “stitching” dates back to the early days of VR videography, when montages of photography were stitched together to create a larger image – especially when using Apple’s QTVR and scanned film as our tools. Many photographers have used a wide range of tools over the years to create panoramas for long prints, but many are now available to us as great for simple work. There are plenty of free/cheap options as well as advanced options. Here’s a comparison list with lines, prices and more.
Spherium: 360º Photos Explained
Some of the most popular ones are Panoweaver, Pitigui, and Color Autopano/APG (my favorite). You can use Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) to create many types of Panos. My friend and colleague Colin Smith with PhotoshopCAFE has a great video tutorial showing how to create a panel in Lightroom with the new Boundary Warp function, which uses content fill materials to fill in missing information at the edges.

My personal preference is to use Kolor APG to create both my recorded and 360-degree panoramas. The UI takes some learning, but the tools are solid and deliver great results. If you need specific instructions on how to use the software, Kolor has documentation and manuals on their website. Otherwise, whatever sewing program you use should give the same results.
Once you’ve selected your panel in APG and adjusted everything to get the best result for a spherical panel, export it as a PNG file to keep the glow around the processed image so it’s easy to edit in Photoshop.

This is where I often show my large panels as most of my work is printed on a large press or on an Epson Stylus R2000 7 color inkjet printer on photo paper or canvas. I will continue to work in this hi-res mode until I can edit the 360 VR model below.
An important part of creating a professional panorama – whether for VR or print projection, is cleaning up any errors during stitching, filling in holes in the ground or sky, and general color correction. This is best done with image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. Some people have luck with GIMP, but I only use Photoshop.
I opened the PNG file in Photoshop and went to the available options. I usually stretch the selection by a few pixels to make sure there’s no ghost at the end when I’m done.
Then I set the Content-Aware Fill option, which fills the sky with a simple outline above, even if there are clouds.

Often, your panel may have minor alignment errors that need to be corrected in Photoshop. You really need to check to play and find your panel image at the same time. Usually strong horizontal or vertical lines/edges inside and there are faults so look at the horizontal line first.
Sometimes it’s as simple as using a healing brush or patch tool to fix bad areas, or you can open the original matching frame from your photo and copy/merge large sections to use and hide the problem. This is just a practical process that requires scaling/distribution and applying a warp transform to a text to get it right, take your time.
Next comes color correction, and my go-to tool is the Adobe Camera Raw Converter, which helps flip sharp objects and bring out shadows if frames are shot in the dark. I usually like a warmer image than the camera captures, so I adjusted that and added Clarity, Vibrance and Saturation while keeping natural levels so they weren’t too harsh.
In this case, I save the hi-res print file and proceed to scale the image copy to 360 VR in the next step.

The “sweet spot” for most gamers on a VR panorama screen for best results is 6000 x 3000 (2:1 aspect ratio). 4000 x 2000 is acceptable but the image quality is not the best. Sites like DJI’s SkyPixel provide high-quality VR that lets viewers play games, while Facebook’s 360 creates a quick way to distribute your panels to people while blocking out shadows in your image (especially seen from the air). Many people in the mass media.
A great tool from Steven van de Stock at Stfoto.nl is this Photoshop image you can download for Facebook 360 VRs. It has guidelines to help you accurately measure, position and build your pan so that the horizon and POIs are well positioned when viewing on Facebook. It also includes the correct EXIF data so when you save your final JPG image, it’s ready to post directly to Facebook.
Using this image, I will be able to continue building my 360 VR panel. It is stitched in APG color and features a 360º non-complete projection pattern.
As in some of my previous tests, the entire panel is either top (top) or bottom (nadir), without a single pixel.
