USA updated its iPhone app on Tuesday to allow customers to deposit checks wirelessly. By taking a photo of both sides of the check using the iPhone’s camera, customers can send the check image directly to USAA, where it can be authenticated and stored. USAA’s new USAA Deposit@Mobile feature expands on the bank’s existing iPhone app, which debuted in May and has been downloaded nearly 140,000 times, USAA said. The free mobile app already allows customers to check balances, transfer funds and locate ATM locations. Mobile check deposit is the next step in USAA’s Deposit@Home service, allowing customers to scan and deposit checks using a PC and scanner. “Our members are on the go and need to be able to manage their accounts anytime, anywhere,” Wayne Peacock, USAA’s executive vice president of corporate business operations, said in a statement. “Nearly 50% of our 1 million mobile phone users are active duty military members who can be deployed anywhere. Congress passed and President Trump signed the CARES Act. The law includes provisions for eligible taxpayers who filed tax returns for 2019 or 2018. They can receive payments of up to $1,200 for individuals or $2,400 for couples. Parents also receive $500 for each eligible child.¹

If you are eligible to file a 2018 or 2019 tax return, your payment will be deposited directly into the same bank account used for tax filing purposes. If you did not file your 2019 tax return, the account used will be used for your 2018 tax return.

Note that the IRS distributes payments in waves; So if someone you know gets it but you don’t, no worries.

USAA, a financial institution that serves veterans, took $3,400 in CARES Act payments from families of disabled veterans to cover existing debt, denying families emergency funds in times of personal economic stress. Text messages from USAA customers indicate this is not an isolated incident. In fact, USAA uses standardized statements in response to customer complaints about their payments.

According to the veteran’s wife, a USAA representative told her in a phone conversation that “they shouldn’t have had the loan in the first place” and refused to pay her the $3,400 CARES Act payment.

“I’m unemployed and my husband is injured and can’t work,” said Carrie, whose emergency economy pay was waived by USAA. “We don’t know where to rent now. It helps my 18-month-old son get medicine. I’m dumb, they don’t care.”
