In the latest twist in electronic banking, customers of financial services company USAA are now able to deposit checks directly through their iPhone. USA updated its iPhone app on Tuesday to allow customers to deposit checks wirelessly. By taking a photo of both sides of the check using the iPhone’s camera, customers can send the check image directly to USAA, where it can be authenticated and stored. USAA’s new USAA Deposit@Mobile feature expands on the bank’s existing iPhone app, which debuted in May and has been downloaded nearly 140,000 times, USAA said. The free mobile app already allows customers to check balances, transfer funds and locate ATM locations. Mobile check deposit is the next step in USAA’s Deposit@Home service, allowing customers to scan and deposit checks using a PC and scanner. “Our members are on the go and need to be able to manage their accounts anytime, anywhere,” Wayne Peacock, USAA’s executive vice president of corporate business operations, said in a statement. “Nearly 50% of our 1 million mobile phone users are active duty military members who can be deployed anywhere. Ease of mobile access is critical to providing the highest level of customer service possible.” Fueled by the shift to 3G wireless technology, mobile phone operators and financial institutions have introduced a variety of mobile banking services and apps in recent months. Last September, for example, Sprint Nextel launched its MyMoneyManager app, which lets users check bank balances and pay bills wirelessly, and credit card provider Visa has introduced a number of similar initiatives. For active member deposit accounts, we have suspended recovery of negative account balances that existed at the time the stimulus payment was deposited for 90 days, allowing members to access the full stimulus payment for that period. This policy applies retroactively to member accounts that have a negative balance at the time the stimulus check is deposited.
If you received your 2019 or 2018 tax refund via check in the mail, the IRS will send the stimulus check to your physical address on file. Members with bank accounts can easily store and securely access funds by logging in and using the USAA Mobile App.
